Sony Vaio P @ 1.8Ghz Unboxed.

vaiophand Pocketables summarised a week with the Vaio P a few days ago and seems quite happy with the device. I’ve been following some discussion between a few owners on twitter too and there’s a lot of positive feedback flying around.

One thing that worries me a bit is the 1.3Ghz processor on Vista. Although the SSD seems very fast, I wouldn’t feel comfortable with the heavy stack of Vista processes stealing very valuable cycles from my Firefox experience. I’d be much happier with the relatively thin Windows XP as a base OS but unfortunately that’s not an option. There is a 1.8Ghz version though and having tested Vista with the OQO 2+ that uses the same 1.8Ghz platform and a slightly slower SSD, I know it would be acceptable for most daily work…

I had the 1.8Ghz OLED screen version of the OQO 2+ with the 64GB SSD. It was running Vista and at 1.8Ghz it performed extremely well. I used it as a desktop with the stylish docking station and an external 1400×900 monitor and the fact that it was a ultra mobile PC was almost transparent in my usage scenarios.

We’ve got a chance to get feedback on the 1.8Ghz version this week as JKKMobile has just taken delivery of one from Conics.net. I spoke to JKK on Friday and I know he’s planning a lot of coverage and the first content out of the door is this unboxing video.

I was look at the P (again) at a corporate Sony store on the weekend, and it would seem from the demos they had out that the hinges might end up getting a bit loose after a while, out of the four units they had one of the screens wouldn’t almost stay up anymore and another one was very loose for my taste. I guess time will show.

Talking about hinges in Vaio P. I have checked the stores here in Thailand, knowing how much Thais love to grab things and spin them till they are tired. The screens in Vaio P do get really loose (and it’s only been a month since Vaio P hit the stores)! I am about to cancel my order.

    Good luck

How long before JKK somehow manages to hack a touchscreen onto the vaio p?!
I’m taking bets let the bidding commence!

  5. EC says:

I doubt the Vaio P thickness or let’s say THINness will allow adding anything like a touchscreen to it unless you can find a “plastic film” touch screen :)

    GREAT!

That’s a step in the right direction, though sad that the official “word” by Sony is still that it’s not supported. I guess that in itself shows that Sony doesn’t want you to “confuse” their P with the “sea of Netbooks”?

I don’t know.. it is still a little big I think. I was looking for a pocket
pc replacment with wifi etc. They just quit making pocket pc’s so I’ve
been thinking UMPC. The only one that I like right now is the oqo 2+ which
is not out yet and still a pretty penny.

  10. EC says:

ASUS and HP still offer Pocket PCs.
If you’re coming from a HPC or PPC (as I did a few yrs ago) the OQO might be heavy, bulky and noisy. I’d go for an Aigo or UMID if I were you!

I have had 4 ipaq’s over the years, currently have the HP 211 model, which
I like, but well used. Thought maybe it was time to look for a new model
but most of the pocket pc models are getting old. No new true PDA’s, just
mobile phones, just wanted a pocket pc with bluetooth/wifi, no GMVC ABG
monthly subscription type thing or paid wireless. Disappointing that only phones are available these days.

So, figured why not consider something else, UMPC, MID? or UMID, wanted
to keep it within the pocket pc size if possible. Does not look good with
reguards to the true pocket pc lines; days are numbered…. I thinK?

So what is a true pocket pc junkie going to do?
