We don’t see anything on the UMID website yet (apart from the hidden page we found last month) but this does tally with words we’re hearing through the grapevine.
We’ve requested a sample device and are in contact with UMID and resellers to get this one ASAP. A lot of people are waiting for it! As for pricing…we should have that info in a week or two. Maybe sooner.

I’m looking forward to the pricing of this unit. With the foot print and performance of my TX2000 I bought last year (before I found out about the netbook craze) I have no driving reason to buy a netbook.
But with the foot print of this device, it would bring a totally new level of usability for school! Most netbook’s are still large enough that you can’t share them on a students desk with a text book…that’s the biggest draw back I have seen so far. Even the tiny Asus 901 or 701…too big to place on TOP of the text book and still maintain usefulness of both. The only device’s I have seen so far that are small enough to do this, are the Everun Note, and the Fuj. U820…both are far to expensive for student use. Currently I use a HTC Advantage for this (keyboard sucks for this, but I have made due)
I want a device I can work totally in “office suits” with, including Wifi with full browsing to use teachers useful links and software, plus the ability to take notes on top of a text book…with long battery life and durability to go into my already over stuffed back pack
You know…maybe I should do my own Blog on Mobile device for student’s…Do you think I could get sample devices for that Chippy?
:-)
The education market is huge. I think there are some education/tablet blogs out there but I can’t recall any mobile/education blogs.
If you build a good following, write about important subjects and prove that you’re honest and passionate about what you’re writing, people should give you devices for testing, yes. At least that’s how I did it! Maybe there’s a quicker way by finding a good sponsor.
Steve.
Chippy, this is the device for me now that it seems that Velocity Micro’s Aigo/compal mid might not happen. Has any of UMID’s products ever been available in the U.S.A.?
Ooh, I’ve missed this one. Everun Note Mini :D
Very curious what sort of price it’ll have.
are you supposed to thumb-type or hunt-n-peck?
Thumb type. It’s going to be great for those like me who can blaze on a blackberry. ;)
For a phone a thumb keyboard might be ok but for more of a real computer I personally hate thumb keys. I think most people feel the same way. I hope this thing is long enough so that two handed keyboard input would be doable? If it was 6.9″ or more then it would be a great computer. If it is shorter than that it is not going to a big seller.
If that thing is able to fit in my jacket pocket I’d buy one! I really want a UMPC or computer that has a touch type keyboard.
this is the holy grail , please god let it be dirt cheap and available in the uk. please god let it get picked up by a mobile operator in the uk . amen.
I agree the holy grail is a pocket size touch type keyboard computer!
This one is very promising indeed, but I reserve the final judgment until after hearing the battery life with 3G use. The probable lack of USB host might be a showstopper but that depends on the price.
Price and battery specs are quite decent from the info available at this time.
If we can import it: Would the 3G be usable in Germany?
i wish it have a SD/MS card reader.
I wish it had a trackpoint
As you said:I think it will all come down to battery life and pricing. If this one can beat the 4hrs online mark and stay below a 500€ pricing it will be what the sony should have been.
For me personally its competing against the wibrain, with the keyboard advantage on the side for the umid but 6hrs online and 520€ without 3G will be hard to beat.
with the slow waning of the Zaurus, and the lack of a new Nokia tablet with a decent keyboard and lots of storage, I can see this would be a real winner!
I don’t need something pocket-sized, just something that will fit in my gadget bag (small camcorder sized)
