Here’s a video that will get you thinking! Android and Windows CE on a nokia N800. The story comes from ITPro where you’ll find a lot more info. Apparently it’s not a product at the moment but it’s in the evaluation stage. My first question is, can you install an X86 virtual container and load XP on it? I doubt it, but even so, Android and Maemo on one device would be awesome.

I posted on internettablettalk’s forums yesterday that I’d love to see an N97 running VMWare with Maemo and Android. And even better would be an N97 scaled up to the size of an N810. That’d be about the most perfect phone ever, IMO.
i know someone got win95 running in dosbox.
or was it win3.11?

“can you install an X86 virtual container and load XP on it?”
Short answer: no.
Long answer: vmware doesn’t do emulation. They do virtualization. The difference is an emulator is capable of running non-native instructions by translating them into something the processor can handle, generally at a hefty performance cost. Virtualization uses a hypervisor to share the CPU between 2 or more operating systems without either knowing something else exists on the system.
Thanks Theluketaylor.
I suspected so that it wouldnt work.

How about Win95 on a Nokia N82

Now how about Win98 on Nokia N95?

Like I’ve been saying for a while now, I feel these “non UMPCs”, be it a Nokia internet tablet or smart phone or whatever, will be able to do the things we as of now have to rely on “real XP/Vista UMPCs” for sooner than any UMPC/MID will be pocketable and “all-day-battery capable” with either in the cloud solutions or like here by virtual machine solutions!
