This month has to be one of my favorite since I started blogging about mobile computing but the icing on the cake has to be the return of the 1KG netbook. I’ve had hands-on and I really like this Samsung N350. So much so that if it turns up in a 3G version, it will probably replace my ‘old’ Gigabyte Touchnote 3G. That extra core will smooth out the transition from XP to Vista and maybe, just maybe, allow me to switch to 720p video editing a badly need upgrade from my current 480p YouTube format.
At 399 Euros, it’s 50 Euros more than we were expecting and it’s also only coming with 1GB and Windows Starter so I hope Samsung have plans for other versions soon. Note that it doesn’t have the 1024×768 Screen that Samsung told us about at IFA. I’d pay up to 500 Euro for a Home Premium 3G version of this. I’ll drop my 2GB RAM and Runcore SSD in from my Touchnote and it should fly!

Is there something specific and immutable that ties you to Microsoft Windows? You seem concerned about transitioning from XP to 7 in terms of performance. Personally, I don’t think that concern is a big deal (Windows 7 does OK). I’m obviously a vocal promoter of Linux because of freedom, but it’s worth pointing out that if you just need general purpose software then you should consider Linux because of performance. This hardware is well supported (none of that NVIDIA nonsense) by open source (and proprietary) drivers, and because you have greater control over what is and isn’t installed, you can reduce the demand on your system’s parsimonious resources.
I agree with aftermath. Except I wonder how battery life between Windows 7 and Linux is…
Not gonna upgrade your touchnote to the new T1005M? Is the touch not as important as the weight? Cause the T1005 is about 50% heavier than this.
+1 regarding gnu/linux. although windows 7 is really good, using a gnu/linux distro will just make all netbooks so much more useful.
me personaly i don’t even consider anymore a notebook with a resolution of 1024×600. that’s just useless. we have more and more content and the widescreen size does not help but to scroll constantly. i can’t believe that only sony and hp are using higher resolutions on 10.1″…
quite several other manufacturers have produced high res 10″ netbooks too like ASUS, gigabyte, samsung.. etc
If you like the gigabyte – what about the t1005 which is the dual core version?
it’s a pity that gigabyte’s convertible netbooks have low build quality and considerably awful looking designs. I mean, most of its products have low build quality though not necessarily bad looking
