More R2H images.

Asus have kindly sent me their marketing image pack for the R2H which I’ve uploaded to the gallery and product info page.

R2H images

Two things to note from the close-ups.

1) No docking port.

2) VGA,TV-out and Ethernet port on board.

This, for me, puts it above the Samsung Q1 and in the same media-oriented bracket. Considering the gps, webcam, fingerprint scanner and tv-out, its going to sit above the Samsung Q1 in terms of specifications and in the same media-oriented bracket. If the price is better than the Q1, this is going to knock it for six.

Regarding launch date, we’ve heard two rumors of week 37 in Europe. That’s the week starting 10th Sept.

the tv-out is on the top (yellow output) but i cant see the vga and ethernet port ?

from other pictures I saw…the ethernet port is behind a little panel on the right side BUT the vga-out is on the PORT BAR wich will be pluged on the left side.

Looks great…I think my money will definitely be going on this one……I’ll be waiting to see what configurations they come up with first though.

  3. Chippy says:

OK. I could be wrong but I was assuming the VGA port was next to the Ethernet port. See this close-up.

Steve, I’m curious: out of the four items you mentioned, the only one that the Q1 doesn’t have is TV-out. Is that really a feature that puts the R2H over the top of the Q1 for you?

  5. Kevin C. Tofel says:

Actually, I’m even wondering about the TV out jack as I don’t see it. I could be missing it, but I see a headphone jack, a mic jack; where’s the TV out?

I don’t see that jack as valuable (for me personally); I’d tend to do TV the other way, i.e.: from a signal to the UMPC, not the other way around. I love using the Slingbox on it and it’s great for DVDs, but I don’t have use to take media on the UMPC and output it to a big screen. That’s just me…to each, his or her own! ;)

  6. Chippy says:

I think its on the top left. Marked a/v out. Looks like a headphone socket but they’re usually 4-pole. Yellow is also the standard colour for composite video.

I think this could be a great advantage if you can run two screens simultaneously. I can think of game and PVR scenarious where you can have all the control keys appearing on the UMPC and the video/game appearing on the TV (or the VGA of course.)

Is also good for previewing video content on an interlaced screen if you’re using the UMPC as a video capture unit.

    Steve.

  7. Chippy says:

    Kevin.

You’re right. It sounds like I only regard the TV-out as an advantage. I actually mean ‘this, plus the GPS, fingerprint, single sign on and built-in cam’

    Steve

  8. Chippy says:

Posting corrected following Kevins comments. Thx Kevin.

  9. Erik says:

    steve.

its true…it is a vga-out symbol, but its for the “Expansion Port” where you will be able to plug the OPTIONAL “port-bar” which contain the vga-out port and some other ports.

i would prefer an onboard vga-out, but it looks like it will not be the case. lets hope the port bar will not be too expensive cause it will be a “must have”

  10. Erik says:

what you can find on the PORT BAR is :

    Display (Monitor) Output
    SPDIF Output Jack
    LAN Port
    4 USB PORTS

  11. Chippy says:

Eric. Thanks for clearing that up. It looks like you can buy a VGA cable to plug in there OR use a port bar.
OK. No docking solution but the port-bar will help.

    Steve.

  12. Erik says:

by the way….i called ASUS USA NOTEBOOK SALES yesterday and they told me they expect the release date for the R2H to be last week of August or first week of September.

They didnt receive the final spec yet.

They also told me that the product would be available in the US and in Canada at the same time.

  13. Erik says:

Something is weird on this picture

    http://www.carrypad.com/images/r2h-rhs.jpg

the number two point to an output for the “Expansion Port”, but under the number two “behind the little door” is a form that look just like a vga-out port ?

    weird ?

  14. Chippy says:

    THanks for the info Eric.

Isn’t the VGA ‘form’ just the protective sheath for the port on the flap-down door?

I like that it has SPDIF-out. Films encoded with AC3 can be output to a decent audio decoder.

    Steve.

  15. Erik says:

the VGA ‘form’ on the flap-down door is just the protective sheath for the “Expansion Port” which contain the “vga-out port”.

    so, no on-board vga.
(maybe you can correct the your post in the journal !!)

advantage to the Q1 for the vga output !

one thing we didnt hear of is the sensibility of the touch-screen on the R2H….is it 80mg screen (Q1) or the 120mg screen (EO) ! lets hope its the 120mg one ! :o)

  16. Erik says:

maybe there is a kind of on-board vga finaly via THE PROVIDED ADAPTER…

    from the user manual:
Display (Monitor) Output (with provided adapter)

The 15-pin D-sub output is an analog port that supports a standard VGA compatible
device such as a monitor or projector to allow viewing on a larger external display.

that would be great ! no need to buy the port-bar except if you want the SPDIF Output Jack !

you dont need to correct your post steve ! sorry ! :oP

  17. Neil says:

The portbar seems like a nice solution, but I don’t like this quote from the manual.

WARNING! You must plug the power adapter into the UltraMobilePC or PortBar
when you use PortBar. The PortBar must not be used when the UltraMobilePC is
    operating in battery mode.

I’d really like ot be able to plug an external display in without needing external power.

  18. Erik says:

    neil…

i think you can plug an external display in without needing external power….
if you use the Display (Monitor) Output (with the provided adapter)

    so…there will be 2 ways to connect a monitor….
with the port-bar or with the provided adapter both of which plug into the Expansion Port !

  19. Neil says:

Ahhh…I see that now. I had read that bit, but for some reason thought they were talking about the portbar.

    Cheers
    Neil
