I haven’t had a chance to look at the Pepperpad for the last 4 days. Guess why. Only 5 episodes of Desperate Housewives recordings to go and then it’s free! Steve / Chippy. View details of all Ultra Mobile devices in the ultra mobile PC product database. From N800 to Flybook V5, its all there!

A quick note. I’ve moved the linklist to a more manageable place under my content management system. The old link has been re-directed so there’s no need to change anything. Carrypad ultra mobile PC links. The advantage is that I’ve gone through all the links and removed dead-wood (re-bloggers or sites that haven’t published anything in the last month are out.) Yesterday I introduced the ranking figures into the ultra mobile PC product list and today, while I’ve been in the coding mood, I’ve optimised the list to include more information on the products. Firstly, I’ve removed the categories from the page. I don’t think its doing anyone any good dividing up the products into Origami and non-Origami. People are more interested in comparing specifications, not marketing terms. Instead, I’ve reorganised the table to include GPU info, the weight and a keyboard column. All columns are sortable via the links on the top of each column […]

Last week I was shocked to see the ASUS R2H loaded with over 70 processes all competing for CPU, bus, memory and disk access. My 500Mhz VEGA was faster than the 900Mhz R2H. Really. With heavyweight operating systems on low-powered devices, the manufacturers must take responsibility for producing a clean image and not loading it up with crap that simply reduces the quality of the customer experience. Ctitanic/Frank has found another background process that’s affecting usability. Its the Vista indexing processes. Much like anti-virus programs, this will be sitting around […]

A tip has been posted to the tipsters favorite blog, Engadget, with a picture of a new Nokia tablet/companion device. Its disappointing because it seems to be a device that’s further away from the centre of the ultra mobile PC market than the 770. It also doesn’t have the keyboard that Nokia were promising. I only hope that this is one of the range of prototypes that Nokia was looking at and that this Mylo wannabe will end up in the bin. There’s no place for a small-screened device any […]

Following up the news that the Vega is now available in the UK and Australia, I can report that the Vega is now available in the U.S. My Prediction of $850 was almost spot on because Dynamism have it listed with a pre-order price of $879. My Vega is out in Finland at the moment where Coxion are doing an assessment on it and I’m really missing it. After Finland, its due to go to the U.S. so it’s going to be a while before I get it set up again […]

It took me a while to code this into the portal but its now done. I’ve implemented a click-based ranking system for products in the ultra mobile PC product portal. The ranking is based on a rolling 7-day pageview calculation and is a relative indication of what’s hot (over all product categories) on the product page. After I’ve built up some stats history, I might start to include some historical graphs and ‘top ten’ pages. It will be fun to see how interest in devices changes. The product page now defaults […]

‘JKK’ just emailed me to say that he’s posted a new video. This time its the turn of the TabletKiosk i7200 series ultra mobile PC to get the Vista workout. Lets just say up-front that you shouldn’t be putting Vista on as the main OS on your PC at the moment. In fact, based on JKK’s feedback, I haven’t even started with Vista yet. The speed of Vista on these small device is surprising a lot of people and other benefits like Media Center, better touch integration and general improvements in […]
