Pepperpad 3 mini-review

Posted on 20 October 2006

[Update 28 Nov 2006: The full Pepperpad 3 review has now been posted on the Carrypad portal. ] It was a great unboxing experience in the sun. An easy setup experience and I was online and surfing within 5 minutes of finishing the photo-set. This is how it should be with the Mobile PC Easy Life. Then came the big problem. I’m an advanced user (some say otherwise!) and this little net-nipper is aimed at my Mum. I couldn’t get my IMAP sub-folders. I couldn’t mount an NFS or Samba […]

Intel/Yahoo UMPC news.

Posted on 17 October 2006

A number of sites are reporting today that the Intel/Yahoo ultra mobile PC is going to be manufactured by Quanta, the same company that is planning to manufacture the One Laptop Per Child / 2B1 in million-piece quantities. Its an intriguing project with a huge number of questions around it. Will Yahoo subsidise the UMPC? Will the Go! software really sit alongside the Microsoft Media player and Plays For Sure shops (apparently it runs XP Tablet Edition.) Is it really an Origami ultra mobile PC at all or is it an […]

UMPC marketing sweet-spot.

Posted on 17 October 2006

If you’re involved with ultra mobile PC marketing, you will have had these thoughts a million times. Should the ultra mobile PC be pushed into the mass-market consumer space with price reductions or should it be left for a while to develop through VAR channels? Hugo Ortega and Dr Neil Roodyn have had this discussion on a podcast which stimulated another refinement of my own ideas about how UMPCs should be marketed. I’m a believer that UMPCs should be left with the value added resellers for the time being. Why? Because […]
