Its just a small blip on the periphery at the moment but like HTC and Apple, if Palm moves in the direction of UMPCs, things could change very quickly. I’m talking about some comment by Ed Hansbury at pocketpcthoughts. Michael Mace, a former VP at Palm was present at a talk given by the Palm CEO and asked him about a project that Jeff Hawkins (Palm founder and CTO) had mentioned a while back. A secret third product category that Palm were looking at. Michael asked Ed whether we would see this project in […]

Its good and bad news I suppose. Yesterday evening my virtual server got overloaded so it was unavailable for a large part of the U.S. afternoon. Apologies if you didn’t get to see what you wanted. It was bad news for you. The good news is that I spent the last 3 hours trawling through a million different hosting plans to find a new one. I’ve found one and I’ll be moving Carrypad.com over to U.S-based servers as soon as I can. It will take a few days to migrate […]

I think this is going to be a never ending story now. Amtek still haven’t produced the docking station for the T700 (aka v7110, Easybook P7, Ago7) that was talked about. Frank reports on Ultra Mobile PC Tips. The problem now is that the device is out there, its working and Amtek will be shifting focus towards the next UMPC. The resellers (especially TabletKiosk) already have a dockable ultra mobile PC in the i7200 series / Founder and I just cant see them all putting pressure on Amtek. Its a […]

I was tempted to blog this from bed after I read it on my Pepperpad at 11pm last night but I just couldn’t build up the excitement for another Apple rumour at that point. I see the news has gone viral now. Its sitting at the top of Techmeme. Are you surprised that they have built a prototype? I’m not. I expect Apple have prototyped just about every home electronic device by now. I think one could say with a fair degree of confidence that they’ve also prototyped and priced-up a ultra mobile […]

Ari Jaaksi runs the Nokia 770 project and open source development within Nokia and he’s just posted an interesting blog entry – ‘Phones are Boring.’ A real teaser! It looks to me like he’s ramping up to something. The VisionI’d like a true operating system (Linux) and advanced middleware (GTK, Gnome, DBUS, ….) power new exciting connected mobile devices. …And yes, you are able to talk, see, hear and communicate through these devices but they are not your old cell phones. They are something else! To be continued … We’re […]

The HTC Athena looks like a Smartphone, MicroPC, Carputer and PMP, all-in-one. UPDATE: New news and images here. UDATE2. 27.03.07 HTC Now have a UMPC: HTC Shift. After scratching about for more info on the HTC ultra mobile PC over the last week and after an extremely interesting meeting with a major distributor of HTC equipment in Europe I have been able to refine some of the rumors and information that I’ve read about HTC’s 2007 top-end smartphones. Firstly though, remember that the Qtek brand will no longer be used? […]

At World of Mobility last week, I spoke with Logic Instrument of Germany who sell the Tetra Computer range of hardened computing solutions. They had an interesting selection of hardened mobile computing solutions. The Tetra Light T8 is an 8.4″ 1.9Kg device with digitiser and touchscreen certified to IP54. The Tetra IX104C3 is a 10.4″ Pentium 1.2Ghz solution. 2.1KG. IP65 protection. This production sample model (which looked like it had been given a fair bit of hard testing) is a Tetra Note XXS convertible planned for launch in mid 2007 and […]
