The Medion RIM 1000 UMPC, based on the Arima design, will be released in 2007 according to feedback I had from Medion today. I suspect this means a CeBit launch in March rather than any time sooner but at least we know it’s still in the pipeline. More news and specs on the Arima ultra mobile PC in our product datasheet. Steve. View details of all Ultra Mobile devices in the ultra mobile PC product database. From N800 to Flybook V5, its all there!

AVING have some nice images of the docking station for the Kohjinsha 7″ LX800-driven UMPC. There’s also some news about other accessories. the peripherals include USB-enabled T-DMB receiver, HSDPA model, and navigation package composed of USB-enabled GPS antenna, navigation software, car-use cradle, and car-use DC adapter. Multi-use docking station. It looks like the accessories are just USB modules but the docking station is a great addition. My only problem with the car pack is that this device doesn’t have a touchscreen!!! More images: AVING article. More specs here [Carrypad spec […]

The ELT408 hand-top tablet from UMEC will be shown at CES next year and it has quite a unique specification. According to the website it has a 7″ screen that runs up to 640×480 res. That must be wrong because they are also talking about having an HDMI-out port on the device. [Update: The screen res is a respectible 800×600. Good resolution] It looks like a convertible device but if you look at the PDF they have, there doesn’t appear to be a keyboard under the screen. There’s a Express […]

Azentek, A company that I hadn’t heard of until this morning, appear to have posted a product update relating to UMPCs in the Origamiportal.com forums. The information and link actually reveals a number of interesting and new devices. A quick brief on Azentek first. They appear to work a lot in the Automotive industry and have a LX800 based Carputer product . I’ll look into this a bit more later as I’ve been doing a little research into the trucking and taxi industry recently. They also sell the Amtek T700 […]

I firmly believe that in a few short years, the average user will be able surfing using hi speed flat-rate data plans through cellular carriers and that most UMPCs will come with the cellular modem built in. If I had a ultra mobile PC with a built in HSDPA modem I’d buy the 6GB ‘flat rate’ from Vodafone and leave that power-hungry and insecure WiFi turned off. Data plans are starting to become more widely available and, apart from the roaming charges which are frighteningly expensive (I live within 1 […]
