Most of the UMPCs that are out there are running with 1,8″ hard drives where the top capacity is 80GB. Toshiba have just announced the MK1011GAH, a 100GB 1.8 inch hard disk. According to Akihabara news it will be available in January 2007. Now you can load your ultra mobile PC up with either more films or more test versions of Windows Vista! Steve. View details of all Ultra Mobile devices in the ultra mobile PC product database. From N800 to Flybook V5, its all there!

The iMobile Atlas Car PC has been reported via OnlyUMPC and Gizmodo but I can’t find a reference to it on the iMobile website. I think this is pre-release news. There’s no price either. Its a double-DIN unit and appears to be well specified. The image above shows a camera image and there an amp built-in for direct connection to speakers. If you want to build your own, there’s always the ultra mobile PC route. Centrafuse, one of a number of software overlay solutions, was given a quick test by gunshow at UMPCBuzz. The […]

I was just reading VentureBlog (no, I’m not getting funding, I got distracted on a browse-fest from Techmeme.) where David Hornik said he’d rather give up his TV than his Internet. That’s an easy choice as far as I’m concerned. The TV would go straight away. I’d probably give up the car before I gave up my Internet connection too. Not sure what my wife would say about that but she’s sitting behind me right now updating her blog. Lets ask her…. …she said ‘Car.’ What a Wonderful Wife. Steve. View details […]

Kevin Tofel (jkOnTheRun) has just reported that the Samsung Q1P (Pentium-M version) is up on the Samsung US website. There’s a strange claim of 5 hours battery life which is not really possible if its got the same screen and HDD architecture as the Q1. There’s no ‘buy’ link either. Also strange is that the Q1b page was unavailable when I tried it. I’ll assume that’s a temporary error. In Europe, there’s no sign of the Q1b or Q1p yet. I’m not expecting the Q1P but we should see the Q1B […]

I have all but given up on reliable Wi-Fi hotspot access in Europe. In my locality (and its the same in many other towns) none of the hotspots are free and those that are free are always by some unknown provider. Contracts are expensive and the unknown providers are a security risk in my opinion. If I don’t know who you are, I’m not going to let you handle my data. The launch of Three’s X-Series unlimited internet browsing service last week has prompted me once again to consider upgrading […]

Josh Bancroft loves that Aysoos (As they say in the U.S.) He’s just posted a video of Vista on the R2H at Blip.tv. I don’t think we’ve seen anyone do this yet although there were some reports of success on the Aysers (as they say in England) a few months back on Origamiproject.com I’m having problems getting the video to download at the moment so I haven’t actually seen all of it yet. All I got was that there were issues that make him want to go back to XP. […]

Over the last few weeks I’ve had the chance to test something pretty unique. A combination keyboard and case product made out of ‘smart fabric’ from the UK company, Eleksen. The Eleksen prototype has been seen quite a few times around the Internet since the ultra mobile PC launch last March and Hugo Ortega did a nice video overview of the keyboard last month. I also did a test with it as the mystery keyboard in my typing tests. The keyboard is based on the core Eleksen technology of sensors and switches made from, and […]

Via the Pepperpad forums, someone has put me on to this great bit of Web2.0 work. Its an Ajax (that’s virtual applications inside a browser window to you and me.) multi-protocol instant messenger. A bit like Gaim/Trillian inside a browser window. It has been around for over a year now (Techchrunch talk about it here. I’m so 2005!) and it seems stable and well supported. Its certainly got a big user base now. You won’t get a lot of the bells and whistles that the dedicated clients give you and If you […]
