WindowsforDevices are reporting on an on-screen keyboard that has been developed for UMPCs.
It looks very different!
SpeedScript claims its approach is about as fast as 10-finger typing on a normal QWERTY keyboard.
This has got to be worth a test. Hop over to WindowsForDevices for the low-down and I’ll be back with some tests results later. I’m trying the demo version which is available here. Its off to a bad start because the license agreement window and demo doesn’t fit in an 800×480 window. tut tut!
——-UPDATE——
Update: This is tough to learn. Has anyone read the Frogpad review over at GottaBeMobile? This looks like a similar drama. Holy split-thumbpad!
Two things that hit me immediately. Firstly, its doesn’t appear to integrate with any TIP functionality. Its on the screen all the time until you minimise it. There’s also no re-sizing or transparency options either. On an 800×480 screen it takes up a huge amount of space.
I dare say you could get very fast with this but it would take a serious amount of training and would probably interfere with your normal keyboard skills. Maybe it would be better back on the PocketPC where one-handed operation is a bit easier.
So far, my favorite on screen keyboard so far has been Inscribe. If that had word suggestions and fuzzy pattern recognition for common words it could really be worth using.
The quest for the ultimate mobile keyboard has got to be one the biggest design challenges yet! Respect to anyone that has a go. Keep on trying because one day, you’ll find a great solution.
Steve.
