Anandtech Keynote photos show w-i-d-e concept!

Posted on 19 September 2007

Now if that’s not marketed towards the iPhone commentators, I don’t know what is! This, I guess, is the planned crossover point between MIDs and smartphones!

Intel IDF Ultra Mobility Keynote info

Posted on 19 September 2007

Anand Chandrasekher has finished his ultra mobility keynote speech and Intel have already published some notes that you can find in full here. No images of the demonstrators yet but it wont be long before they appear.

“Mobile users are demanding to take the full Internet experience anytime, anywhere – in essence these users want the full Internet to be delivered to them wirelessly and in their pocket,” Chandrasekher said. “In the first half of 2008, Intel will take a major step to deliver what these users are looking for with our first platform designed from the ground up for MIDs and UMPCs – codenamed Menlow, which will deliver 10x lower power compared to the first UMPCs in the market. After Menlow our next-generation platform – codenamed Moorestown, will increase battery life an order of magnitude by reducing idle power by 10x compared to Menlow.”

So thats 0.5W CPU in 2008 (meaning, in effect, 2W less average. From 9W to 7W. About 25% improvement) and 0.05W in 2008. (Saving, in end effect, very little unless screen, flash and radio designers announce similar improvements!)

A number of early working prototypes, resulting from the formation of the Mobile Internet Device Innovation Alliance 6 months ago, were demonstrated by Chandrasekher.

Where! Where!

“Together, alliance members have worked on engineering challenges, including power management, wireless communications and software integration,” he said.

As I said above, everyone needs to work together.

Chandrasekher provided a sneak peek at Moorestown that consists of a system on chip (SOC) design combining the CPU, graphics, video and memory controller onto a single chip. A Moorestown-based MID will have idle power that will be 10x lower than the 2008 Menlow design, enabling longer battery life in smaller form factors.

Veveo Vtap Web video support for MIDs

Posted on 19 September 2007

image I’ve been reading this press release from Veveo trying to work out exactly what this announcement is. Is it a client application or is it just their new UMPC-tailored interface that I have shown on the video below.

Veveo will deliver a web video experience for mobile users that has the power and full functionality of a traditional desktop application optimized for maximum processing efficiency, speed and on-demand content …

The press release goes on to say that it will be launched in October but if you look at their website (http://www.vtap.com/) you’ll see a new UMPC option. I’ve just knocked up a quick video demonstrating it. Its OK. Not groundbreaking. I guess its success depends on what videos they syndicate. Have a look at a quick demo from me in the video below.

iPhone coming to Germany. Should I join the queue at the flagship store?

Posted on 19 September 2007

image The iPhone isn’t for me, I know that by now but the thing is I live in Bonn where the head office of T-Mobile is and the ‘flagship’ store is just down the road. I’m thinking of queuing up and taking a few HSDPA capable UMPCs with me to show off to the press. What do you think?  7th November could be a bit chilly but it could be fun to do with live video and chat.

Fancy joining me in Bonn? I’ll bring the beer and food.

Mobile devices. Just think about the IDF airtime.

Posted on 19 September 2007

Intel turns over nearly $40bn per year. The IDF shows, twice a year, are their most important of the year and of the 7 keynotes taking place, 2 are focusing on Ultra Mobility. It amazes me to think about what Intel are investing into the idea of UMPCs and Mobile Internet.

Today, in just a few hours, we’ll be hearing and seeing the latest information.

Pocketables. More Advantage 7501 testing notes.

Posted on 19 September 2007

image You can feel it in her report. She’s really liking the 7501.

Every day I learn something new and become more impressed by its power and functionality

Looking at the image of it running in ‘True’ VGA mode I can see productivity there. Its something I didn’t see on the 7500 that I tested but Jenn had to use 3rd party software to get this working 100%. She’s enjoying the browsing more than she was although said that the N800 ‘might have it beat.’ That, to me, means its pretty slow. You can see it on the video I did comparing the Everun to the N800. The Everun is one of the least powerful x86 devices on the market and yet it whips the N800 into the ground on browsing speed. Gmail started in 12 seconds on the N800 and 9 seconds on the Everun. Google Reader started in 25 seconds on the N800 and 6 seconds on the Everun!!! FIE is a feature that is above any sort of Word document or Excel functionality in my list. I do all my doc work in Google Apps. I’ve even moved to Meebo for IM now.

I do see why the Advantage is causing so many surprises though. Its a great compact unit that, productivity wise, can do nearly everything that a UMPC can. If you’re prepared to use different s/w and take the processing time hit (which is something that UMPC owners have to do too) then its fine. Its even got a decent GPS and camera built in which you don’t find on UMPCs. And then there’s the high speed cellular data capability which really defines mobility for me.

More comments from Jenn at Pocketables. One week with the HTC Advantage.

Nec releases WVGA, 4.1" high brightness touchscreen

Posted on 19 September 2007

image High contrast too. This could be perfect for MIDs.

Its 350cd/m2 (brighter than the wonderful Samsung Q1 Ultra / Kohjinsha 1024×600 screen) and has a contrast of 400:1. PPI is 227 which is fairly high (same an N800, slightly more than the U1010 but less than a Sony UX) but in a handheld device, it could work very nicely.

Looking at the specs, the panel takes 200mw with the backlight taking another 800mw near full brightness. That’s not groundbreaking but acceptable I guess.

Wireless Audio Fun. MSI FS110 stereo headphone/headset adaptor review.

Posted on 19 September 2007

Here’s the MSI FS110 Bluetooth headset and audio adaptor.

IMG_4934 IMG_4937IMG_4936IMG_4938

Unlike the Jabra BT8010 headset that Thoughtfix presented a while back, this one contains no earpieces and no local dialing capability. Its a simple adaptor that contains a mic and can support the Bluetooth stereo headphone profile and headset profile. The idea is that you plug your own headphones in or, as in my case, plug it into the home hifi or a line-in jack in your car (or even cassette adaptor.) Its a flexible solution.

Here’s an unboxing and demo using it with the Everun and Nokia 6280. (HQ WMV version at Blip.tv)

As you see in the video, it works really nicely. I’m impressed. There’s a faint click between track changes but the quality of the audio is great. I’m actually having a little trouble getting the Bluesoleil software on the Everun to pair up to the standard headset profile properly so at the moment it can’t be used for Skype calls although the Bluesoleil software is designed for this and the MSI 7110 is for sale on the BlueSoleil website! It could be an interference problem with the 3.6mbps HSDPA kit I installed last night (more about that later this week.) but i’ll have to look further into it to find out whats going on there. It works fine on my mobile phone though and the mic seems to work really well. I’m not sure what the battery life is (single AAA battery is quoted as 7 hours play time)

The best part was that it cost me just 26 Euro which is an absolute bargain. I’m really thinking of getting another one to leave connected to the Hi-Fi at home.
