A BIG thank you to Sophocha in the UMPCPortal forums. He made me realise that I hadn’t tried the Everun out with any music creation/composition tools yet. I have now…and it is HUGE fun. Potentially, for those more musically gifted than me, an absolute boon for on-the-go music creation.
Every band should have at least two Everuns in the tour bus!! (And should send Sophocha and I free tickets to their concerts ;-) ) Enough of the blah blah. Here are the two videos…

For nearly a year, I’ve been looking for a good PC-based routing and live navigation solution that will work with UMPCs. I bought Autoroute 2007 but the touch enhancements were not good enough that it could be used on the go. Then, back in Dec 2006 I tested out CoPilot 10 but again the features just weren’t good enough for UMPCs. Meanwhile in the U.S. iGuidance 4.0 was getting good reviews and at the same time it was being discontinued at V9 in Europe. Oh frustration!
Then, out of the blue, Mapfactor contacted me to see if I wanted to test PC Navigator 7. Of course I agreed and they sent over the latest version which sat on my shelf while I focused on the Solar UMPC project. Only recently was I able to get it installed on the Everun UMPC and start testing it out. And what a breath of fresh air. A simple-to-operate, finger friendly live navigation solution at last! TabletPC2 are testing a Fujitsu U810 UMPC and have posted a short hands-on report.
…keyboard is compact but usable, even for those of us with long nails.
There’s also a positive comment about the screen brightness. Looking forward to a full review of this baby by Linda because I’m interested in the battery life (its got the 4-cell battery) and the keyboard which others have said is a bit annoying due to the number of keys that are double-functioned. I quite liked the white version but the black is much better.

It’s been a very exciting week for the mobile Internet. Two companies have announced developments for mobile devices and one of the announcements was rather a big one. Mozilla, the company responsible for Firefox and MiniMo have announced they they are getting serious. People ask us all the time about what Mozilla’s going to do about the mobile web, and I’m very excited to announce that we plan to rock it. That’s what Michael Schroepfer, aka Schrep, VP of Mozilla Engineering, had to say on his blog. I could say […]

JKK has just posted images of the Eee PC with an underside cover that opens to reveal a memory slot and PCI-Express Mini slot. I suspect that this is one of the high-end models because on the Russian review of the eee PC, there was no upgrade hatch. Blogee certainly managed to upgrade the RAM to 1GB so its obviously real!!!
The PCI-Express mini slot is interesting too. There are modules around that actually include a SIM slot so if you can find space for an aerial, an HSDPA upgrade is possible!

In the last 24 hours Google blogsearch recons 249 blog entries have mentioned the Gphone. On Technorati you’ll find the same pattern. 350 blogs per day going on about it. An no-one knows anything for sure yet! Some of the recent blogs are talking about software platforms, operating systems and even free phones. Personally I’d just like to see more of their superb application suite ported into quick and easy java apps. The Gmail java app for example is one of the quickest and most efficient ways to pick up […]

When the Everun was first revealed, way, way back in the early part of this year, there was a lot of buzz about HSDPA capability. Then, when the small print came out, we learned, and were quite disappointed, that it turned out to be an option. Even then, customers still thought it would be delivered with HSDPA and voice capability as one of the early hands-on-reviews showed a blogger sitting in his car phoning his wife (in a classic bit of video here!) We now know that it was left up to the resellers to offer, or not, HSDPA options.
Ever since my time with the Q1b HSDPA I’ve realised that UMPCs aren’t really mobile for me until they’ve got some form of always-available Internet connectivity and so when I saw the Mikey, a member of the forum, posting about his success I just had to go for it. The company offering the solution was Mobilx, a mobile solutions retailer in Hungary and when I spoke to them about getting one for myself and an Everun owner that was looking for the solution they very quickly responded and within 24 hours I had the solution on my desk. Now that’s the sort of response I like to see!! The product we’re looking at here is an HSDPA-capable data-only PCI-express mini card kit – Expedite EU870D.

Sumit has posted on the team blog at Origamiproject.com asking for UMPC users and potential users to take part in a formal survey. I’ve just completed the survey and entered the draw and it only took 5 mins. Please think about taking 5 minutes of your own time and doing the survey.
