Everex CE UMPC is launched with XP and touchscreen.

Posted on 17 March 2008

Expect this version to roll-out fairly quickly in the US. Why? Because it’s a far better option than the Cloudbook with gOS in my opinion. It’s the Everex CE that they announced last year if my memory serves me correctly [Details here] and compared to the gOS-based Cloudbook it’s got a better build, better spec and runs Windows XP which I think will satisfy more people than gOS. It might get Everex back into Wal-Mart too!

Its being launched in Japan but if the Everex plan is as it was before Christmas, this is due to hit the US market. It won’t appear in Europe as Belinea seem to have dibs on it over here and are calling it the S.Book. JKK and myself got hands-on with this hardware at CeBIT and we’ve got a video to put up. I’ve also got a review from the UMPCPortal sponsored S.Book user to share  so stay tuned for those items coming very soon.

From Everun to Q1 Ultra.

Posted on 17 March 2008

17032008202 (2) (640x480) As many of you know, I’ve been using a Raon Digital Everun as my ‘personal’ mobile computer for the last 6 months. I’ve used it as a MID style device which means it’s been in my pocket, has been HSDPA-enabled and has been used for web browsing and apps, emails, IM, Google reader and, when needed, the occasional moblog. It’s been a superb device and one of the first PC’s I’ve been able to grab and go with without having to worry too much about battery life. Its also one of the first PC’s I’ve really started to care for. In a way, it’s been the most personal computer I’ve ever had.

Today though, and possibly for the next few months, I’m using my Q1 Ultra. I may not go back to the Everun.

The ASUS R50 is a 5.6″ Intel Atom-based ‘slate’ UMPC with 3G, GPS and daylight-readable screen. It runs Windows Vista on the 1.3Ghz version of the Intel Silverthorne (Atom) CPU with SSD storage up to 32GB.

Take a look at the video and see what you think.

Nokia working on ext. screen and keyboard support

Posted on 14 March 2008

Nokia is working on software support for external screens and keyboards under a project called ‘NoBounds.’ Its not surprising, but it’s very significant and could open up mobile phones to be used with third party screens and keyboards for a more desktop-like experience. It could also open the doors for a whole new range of accessories. A bit like the hi-quality design I drew up last year! More interesting than my design is the video and information that Internet Tablet Talk got hold of.   Internet Tablet Talk: The NoBounds […]

Q1 Ultra Premium at Kev’s place tonight.

Posted on 14 March 2008

One of the most impressive UMPCs I’ve ever used was the Q1 Ultra Premium at CeBIT last week. Combined with XP, the extended battery and that lovely screen it provides a superb, smooth and reliable multimedia experience. JKKMobile and myself shot a video showing live video editing and we were both pretty amazed at the result! Kevin Tofel of JKontherun ordered a Q1 Ultra Premium earlier this week and has just had notice that Mr Delivery is on his way. I’m really interested to hear about what he thinks as he’s quite the HD fan!

I resurrected my own Q1 Ultra (not the premium version unfortunately) with XP this week and have been using it for the last 4 days. Its a quality bit of kit and if I manage to squeeze HSDPA into it over the weekend i’ll probably use it as my main mobile device for a while. With the extended battery, keyboard and 2GB RAM it’s far more productive than my Raon Digital Everun but requires a bag to carry it around. We’ll see if that turns out to be an acceptable trade-off!

Intel Atom, Facts and Analysis Part 2 of 2.

Posted on 14 March 2008

centrinoatom In Part 1 of this report, I wrote about Intel’s Atom and MID master-plan. In Part 2 here, I put forward my thoughts about some of the main features of Intel’s Centrino Atom platform – The MID platform. It is important to remember that Atom-based devices are consumer-focused and not traditional productivity computing devices. They will be power-efficient, small and cheap but processing power is not as the top of the list of features. Pricing and and sizing take priority with Atom along with what I believe is a very important and mostly overlooked aspect of the Atom ecosystem – the software.

WiMax-enabled Nokia Tablet news

Posted on 14 March 2008

According to a Boy-Genius four-liner, there’s a rumor that the Nokia N810 will launch with WiMax soon. I don’t see many people jumping up and down with joy though. A clutch of users in Baltimore perhaps but even these people are still wondering how much it’s going to cost. WiMax on the N810 is at most, a demonstrator for the Xohm ecosystem so I personally think it’s one we can ignore as end users. If Nokia wanted to make a peoples product they would drop a 2.5G modem inside and […]
