It was bound to happen. Here they are, the first pictures of the EEE 900 unboxed.
The specs are as predicted – Celeron 900mhz, 1GB RAM, 12GB SSD, 8.9 inch screen, multi-touch trackpad. The keyboard and battery are the same as in the older models. At 990g, it also still weighs under a kilogram.
What’s interesting is the box design still features an EEE 700 on the front. No matter though, now that the first ones are out in the wild it won’t be long before the rest of us get our hands on them!
I thought about it for all of 10 minutes after I posted about Engadget earlier. The more giveaways the merrier I say, so to celebrate the fact that UMPCPortal hit 1 million page views last month I’m giving away a brand new WiBrain B1E. It’s global UMPC giveaway day! I’ve had a quick word with my friends at Mobilx and here’s how we’ll do it.
You click through to Mobilx and have a look around to see what your fave object d’lust is. Come back here and go to this forum and enter your fave item. Of course, you’ll need to register so that I can contact you if you win (i’ll be watching for those multiple registrations and ip addresses folks!) If you win, you get a code that you can redeem at Mobilx for a Wibrain B1E. All applicable EU purchase taxes and postage paid (you will be responsible for your local import duties.)
At the end of the day I will have introduced you to one of my favorite UMPC resellers (I’m an affiliate so if you buy something there, you help UMPCortal too!) and someone will walk away next Friday with a WiBrain. Oh, and if you win, don’t forget to write a report for us!
Last date for entries: 1200 GMT+2, Friday 18th April.
I’ll have to set up a competition here that supports Euro-peeps as revenge on those lazy toads at Engadget. Any EU-based HTC Shift suppliers out there that want to help out with a prize?
I got a bit distracted on the site yesterday doing lots of things to optimise the product pages (all product pages now show the latest forum entries if there is a related forum. E.g. HTC Shift.) and to tidy up the front page, forums and get the Wiki function enabled. Everyone is welcome to contribute – Non members too!
Then I had a great chat with Jeff Moriarty of Intel. He’s part of the software ecosystem for Moblin and MIDs and wants, just as I do, to engage the 3rd party software community so if you have an idea for software you want to write or see on top of Moblin, either as a standalone 3rd-party app or as something that gets bundled up with the Ubuntu or Asianux distro’s, let me or him know. Here’s his opening blog on the Intel Software blog network. For some background on Moblin, check out Dan’s report.[More after the break…]
JKK and I talk about the HP 2133 and it’s surrounding market. It looks like VIA have a winner on their hands but is it going to be enough to compete against the incoming Atom-based devices?
Another Snapdragon-related report from Stacey at GigaOM who quotes Qualcomm as saying they have 15 device manufacturers lined up for Snapdragon-based devices that should be available in 2008. That’s a lot. But not if Qualcomms or Stacey’s definition of a ultra mobile PC is different from mine. If we re-name the devices, mobile Internet smartphones and consider the prototypes shown at CES then I can believe it because in the smartphone world, every manufacturer has to play the Internet game in the top quartile of their product ranges. Anything less […]
There’s been some discussion lately started by Kevin over at jkOnTheRun about the compromises we are willing to make when choosing our mobile devices. As some of you may remember, I got an HTC Shift a couple of weeks ago. Well, I have been struggling with this over the past few weeks and I made a decision. The Shift doesn’t work for me, and I have already replaced it with something else. (Read on…)
