Not Joanna Stern! Joanna Stern, queen of netbook-land it seems, has published her full review of the MSI Wind and given it 4.5/5 on the morning that it officially launched. Good timing MSI! The review covers pretty much every aspect of the device from design to battery life (Mmm, battery life. Why the cheap, low-cap batteries MSI? It could have been a lot better) and is the must-read if you’re considering the device, which, if the stats on UMPCPortal.com are anything to go by, is a huge number of […]

This is an image of an AMD-based device that has been shown at Computex. Its small, really small. One of the smallest I’ve seen with a full keyboard. It’s got a 7″ touchscreen and its 1024×600. Its starting to look nice. AMD’s officials are saying its running Turion and that it’s 1.5 times the processing power of an Atom and will return 2.5hrs video-playback runtime. Its looking very interesting indeed. [Continued…]

10.2 is just out of the UMPCPortal coverage range (yes, the ASUS 1000 won’t get coverage here either) but this is worth noting due to it being the first device we’ve seen that will be using the VIA Nano processor. Aving snapped the pic but there’s no hands-on or word on price or availability. I’m a little confused as to why they have the old VX700 chipset in there though. A man’s Nano-based PC requires VX800 and no less!! Images of the device, which doesn’t look bad at all, over […]

The Clevo TN70M that we reported on back at CeBIT has now turned into the TN71M but the key feature remains the same. Battery life. More after the image…

The AMD Geode LX has been seem in mobile devices for at least two years but they haven’t had anything new since they upgraded the LX800 to the 900 last year but it now looks like they have something… This mininote by Malata, reported by Aving [translation link] is said to be using a "saemteuron" which I assume is a bad translation of Turion or Sempron. Hard to tell. The GPU is said to be an RS690. We’re trying to work out what’s going on here. It could be a […]

Intel have launched their 4GB and 8GB SSD modules (these aren’t drop-in drive replacements) at 1000-piece prices of $25 and $45 respectively. Although the read-speed is a usable 35MB/s, with a write speed of just 7MB/s, they’re not ideal for the pro user. Sandisk’s offering seems to be slightly better with a ‘streaming’ write speed of 17MB/s TDK also introduced a new SSD drive. Fantastic capacity and performance but huge cost. I’ll stick to my CF card mod for the time being.

Netbooks are taking over! I’m having trouble getting through to any news on Silverthorne and whether it’s shipping. My fear is that production capacity has been switched to help Diamondville. No news on MIDs spotted yet either. Reg Hardware on Diamondville launch. CNet – Atom for netbooks. TGDaily – Intel intros Diamondvile

From Engadget China, this is an interesting image. It’s a line-up of netbooks and includes new devices from Amtek (top-middle,) Haier and others. Engadget China have the details.
