Update. Video session finished. Recording available. I’m back from holiday and it’s time to catch up with the weeks ultra mobile PC news. The quickest way to do that is to ask you guys I guess so the UMPCPortal.com/Live channel will be open later and hopefully Sascha and JKK will also be online. I’ll have the Medion Akoya with me. Maybe JKK will bring the 901 and I think Sascha has a few devices to show off too. Hopefully Ben, Thorsten and Kornel will be around too but I’m not […]

Thousands and thousands of people been testing the Medion Akoya Mini out for the first time in Germany, Austria and Holland over the last few days and I’m sure there have been quite a few photo galleries, unboxing videos and first impressions. I’m one of those many and as most of the owner-reports will have been in German or Dutch, Iit makes sense that I put my own thoughts out in so that people get a feel for how the UK version might be (there’s no confirmation on this BTW) and how the sister device, the MSI […]

Yes the ridiculous acronym of ULCPC (Ultra Low Cost PC) which mostly means netbook, was a term defined by Microsoft not too long ago. They said that devices which qualified as ULCPCs would be able to get discounts on XP installations, making OEMs more likely to make their hardware fit Microsoft’s ULCPC criteria so that they could receive the XP discount. One theory explaining the XP discount move and associated ULCPC definition is to keep a Windows OS on emerging netbooks, and of course prevent Linux environments from ruling the […]

Update: Looks like someone up the grapevine missed a translation; Kjeld points out in the comments that on T-Online’s site (one of the retailers showing the Aspire One) it says ‘versandfertig in 2 Wochen’, which apparently means ‘ships in 2 weeks’. So it is not available just yet, but will be soon. Engadget is reporting that the Acer Aspire One is already available in Europe (see above). Apparently there will be three models released. All will use the N270 Atom CPU and Intel 945GSE chipset, different regional configurations will come […]

Tweakers.net in the Netherlands is reporting that Intel is having trouble keeping up with demand for their Atom processors. This is not the first time we have heard this rumour but it is the first time Intel seem to confirm it. Matty Bakkeren of Intel doesn’t call the shortages drastic but says demand is much higher than anticipated. What effects this will have, if any, aren’t clear but orders are not currently being filled immediately which means delays and shortages of some kind are possible for at least some of […]

Jkk is quickly becoming a pro Eee hacker. His latest exploit involves putting a touch screen on the Eee 900. He has made a nice video talking a bit about the install process and showing how well it works. Glad to see how zippy the Eee is when it comes to page scrolling. I imagine he is using the Grab and Drag Firefox addon, which isn’t running so smoothly on my S41 while I’m unplugged. Head over to Jkkmobile to watch the video and check out plenty of nice shots […]

Jenn over at Pocketables came across an installer that will put Android on your N810 with very little work. She mentions that it was possible previously, but never with this level of ease. All it takes is the a download of the image file to your N810 onto internal or external media, then a download and install of the .deb file (Settings -> Application manager -> Install from file). Reboot and voila, Android on the N810. Jenn says the software works fine on the N810, it appears as though it […]

I recently received the Vye S41 for review courtesy of Dynamism. I’ll be testing it over the next week or so but I wanted to share my unboxing photos and first impressions. The full gallery of unboxing pictures can be seen in a slideshow over at flickr. The box that the unit came packed in was solid, just like the unit itself. There was a surprisingly useful plastic handle at the top, and while the packaging might not be formal, it served it purpose well enough. Opening the box revealed […]
