IDF Fall 2008. Mobile computing Warm-Up.

Posted on 14 August 2008

At about 4am on Saturday I’ll be waking up to start my journey to San Francisco for the Intel Developer Forum (IDF)which starts the following Tuesday. I should be there about 20 hours later after I’ve made my way to Frankfurt and done the two-part flight via Portland. I really hope there are charging points on the plane!! IDF is Intel’s 3-times yearly event that brings together partners, developers, journalists and exhibitors and presents them with a 3-day Intel-fest of the latest advances, products, methods and technologies. For readers here […]

M528 MID Price and Date.

Posted on 14 August 2008

You have no idea how long I’ve been waiting for this moment. A reseller with a real price on the Gigabyte M528. The pricing we had from Aigo in Taiwan was spot on because Expansys have just listed the M528 with 3G, GPS, 3mp cam for just 429 UK pounds (549 Euros in Germany.) Sounds expensive? Its not. This is a….well you’ve heard me talk about it before so I won’t give you the full ‘FIE’ talk now. Take a look at the product page for the full spec list […]

Report, Brazil: Dell E becomes Dell Inspiron 910

Posted on 14 August 2008

Spotted by a reader over at Eee PC news, this looks like a report about the official specifications of the Dell E which the site is referring to as the Dell Inspiron 910. New information in the post includes 3G options at purchase time and also confirms the lack of Fn-Key row which many people in the target audience won’t miss. As is par for the course on these info leaks, there’s no final price or availability date and in this case, no source quoted.  I’ve updated the database with […]

Everun Note marketing info gives performance figures. Gamers take note!

Posted on 13 August 2008

Before I get all excited, I better say up front that the info here is mostly from Raon Digitals marketing group. That said…WOW! The Everun Note could be the most powerful ultra mobile PC yet. Raon have sent over some early marketing material for the Everun Note and there’s a whole lot of interesting information in it. The most interesting is a set of Crystal Mark test results that are showing stunning processing performances figures that are way faster than anything on the ultra mobile PC and netbook market. It […]

When Ultra Mobile isn’t quite good enough

Posted on 13 August 2008

Here’s a classic case of the Ultra Mobile category falling short of requirements. The jack-of-all-trades mobile devices I love just won’t be good enough for my work at IDF next week. Firstly there’s the camera. When I’m out and about the Nokia N82 does a fantastic job of being able to take good photos and Internet-quality videos. Its an ultra mobile multimedia creation device that is largely unmatched in the smartphone world and yet its not good enough. I’ll need a zoom lens, long battery life, easily changeable SD cards, […]

AMD Turion goes Mobile with Raon Digital ‘Everun Note’

Posted on 12 August 2008

So AMD aren’t getting into the mobile or netbook game? Raon Digital have finally confirmed what we spotted months ago. They are building an AMD-based (AMD Turion 64×2 Dual Core 1.2GHz, 1MB L2 Cache) ultra mobile PC running XP for Asian and North American markets. This is not a netbook as it’s tiny! Smaller than an SC3. The AVING news is from a launch event that I knew was happening today. We’re closely in touch with Raon Digital and have our fingers crossed for more details and an early preview […]

Poulsbo. Big video on Little Devices.

Posted on 11 August 2008

Back in April, I published my thoughts on how MIDs could raise the bar for high-end PMPs. I wrote the article after I saw some interesting notes on the video hardware that was going to be included in Poulsbo (now called the System Controller Hub, the chipset that accompanies Z-series Atom CPUs.) When I got the Kohjinsha SC3 a few weeks ago it was the first chance I’d had to test a Menlow based device (Atom Z-series + SCH) so one of the first things I did was to download […]

More highs and Lows with the SC3.

Posted on 10 August 2008

Following on form the previous highs and lows with the SC3… HIGH The SC3 really works well in portrait mode and makes a great crossover e-reader / web reader. About 3 hours later…LOW   The user interface, 10 minutes after booting. Mouse pointer and TIP only. The problem appeared after I tried readyboost (which hung.) Now trying to find a way to recover (safe mode has the same problem.) SC3 specs, info and links here in the SC3 info page.
