Creating content couldn’t be simpler. I just had 20 minutes between tasks here so i decided to transmit and record a little video directly on the Everun Note. This whole post has been done while standing up too!

More info on the Everun Note here!

    the fan is quite noisy…

  2. chippy says:

The fan, in normal use, is noticeable but not loud. Im guessing the fan is just mm’s away from the mic. Im sitting in a parked car right now and i can hardly hear it.

  3. JP says:

    Good news!

  4. Judge says:

all that spinning around made me dizzy!!

  5. JP says:

Looks like you’re definitely in love with it! Can’t remove your hands from it, you’d rather use it to record the review! :-D

Well I guess it’s a good test of the raw performance and multitasking capabilities.

I still look forward a complete test!

Thank you in advance, chippy :-*

  6. chippy says:

I will be doing a full text report.

  7. JP says:

By the way, something that you should definitely test on the Everun Note: standby power consumption.

That’s the kind of details I want to you, will the battery be sucked out in one day of standby (like it’s the case with my EEE PC 701…) or could it be let in standby for days, one week even and still have some usable battery level?

  8. chippy says:

    Good point

  9. Awilum says:

    Hello Chippy, great show yesterday!
I have two questions concerning the system extras.

What kind of software was delivered with the device? Do you have a recovery cd or did you get the windows xp as an optional addition for the system?

And by the way: Did the ssd version of the system will be lighter than the hdd one? This would be impressive!

  10. chippy says:

Mobilx are seling it without OS. (That was news to me this morning) so OS options will come with Windows XP disk. I havent heard from any other resellers yet but my version, dirdct from Raon, came with XP CD.

  11. JP says:

I hope there will be some Linux flavor ready to run on it with full support of all the features.

Maybe “without OS” means that such a Linux will be preinstalled?

  12. Awilum says:

I dont think so. Linux is also an OS. If linux is preinstalled than it would called “OS included”! Without an OS means that the costumer will have to install his own Operating System in order to use the device.
Chippy, did you receive an extra DriverCD for the everun note?

  13. JP says:

Well in my point of view, that’s the kind of mistakes that resellers do.

When the Gigabye M912L was still planned to be sold, some resellers stated “without OS” and not “with Linux OS”…

By the way, you should know that for the commoner “OS=Windows”, shouldn’t you? :-P

  14. Awilum says:

I am sorry, that I haven’t seen many Microsoft commercials to believe that an OS is only Windows!;)
But I will try to contact Mobilx.hu to see if they do.
    Stay tune!

  15. JP says:

Hi chippy, I have another question that may have been answered yesterday but is not in the available recorded part:

Does the SD card protude from the device when inserted?

In other words, is it possible to keep the SD card in place everytime, used as an additional internal storage space?

Because if it is possible, I definitely want the 12GB SSD… If it is not, then I’m not sure I want to be stuck with 12GB only, but I want SSD :-(

  16. JP says:

In the video when you open the mini PCI express port slot, it seems to me that the SD card could enter fully in the SD reader slot, but thank you for the confirmation.

  17. chippy says:

SD card goes all the way in and locks. As does the SIM card.

  18. JP says:

    Perfect!

  19. Schlave says:

I see Conics is offering an SSD version, which significantly bumps up the price. is there any benefit in using an SD card as a makeshift SSD drive, as opposed to one that is actually installed? Aside from the benefit of bigger capacity, I suppose.

  20. Jerry says:

Heat impressions good or bad that you noticed yet Steve and any news on black color availability?

  21. chippy says:

    No news on black.
Heat impressive how cool it is.
DOn’t expect MSI Wind room-temp standards but don’t expect the fan to start winding up either.
Heat only noticeable on the base of the device.
Can get warm during gaming with full power!
    Steve.

  22. Schlave says:

Good demo of the Note’s power there Chip.

    Gosh. This netbook rocks.
    – external power pack beats having to search for a socket
    – laptop-calibre power when wired up
    – a truly pocket DVD and low-end gaming device (unlike my KJS SR which is on Intel A110 -_-‘)
    – the amazingly diminutive size and keyboard
    – SD card slot that allows the SD card to nestle inside as a 2nd hard drive
    – Windows XP
    – 2GB ram possible?

I’m almost prepared to overlook the lack of tablet mode (the thing’s small and light enough) and 7″ screen (holding out hope for an 8.9″ tho XD). This, or the Viliv S7 available in 2009? Will dual-core Intel Atom ever outshine a Turion x2? Hmmm…

  23. Rankin says:

on battery is the CPU locked at 600mhz & single core? or does it dynamically shift up/down depending on power needed?

the battery life isnt as bad as i thought, with wifi on, max bright, CPU constant 50%, it was reporting 2 hours? well with brightness at medium (if still usuable) & CPU under 10% with occasional spikes then it should be able to get about 3 hours, so the extended battery might be bale to get over 4 hours… of course this is all with the CPU in a crippled state (unless it dynamically shifts)

  24. Mark says:

Yes, can the Everun Note take 2GB RAM?

    Cheers!

  25. chippy says:

I really dont think so. Will take apart soon!

  26. Anymouse Reader says:

Chippy, When you going to send the unit to jkk for inside photos? I am sure he is dying to get his hand on it for himself.

  27. chippy says:

I will probably open up myself soon. Need to check if memory is soldered.
    Steve

  28. Nicholas Lee says:

It would be really nice to see if it can do 4GB. Seems a shame to waster the performance and x64 CPU with no room. I’m quite keen to see how well virtualisation works. Means I could carry around different work sets and a deployment testing environment in a very portable format.

  29. TareX says:

Hey Chippy, don’t you think this netbook/umpc IN PARTICULAR deserves a gaming session review of its own?

It would be nice to pile some games with different requirements and show off the Everun note’s gaming potential. I mean, on a site called umpcportal.com, this maybe the only time you’ll get to do that with one of the products you review, considering there are no other dual-processor umpc with a dedicated powerful gfx chip.

    Well?

  30. zak says:

i think that was done yesterday , though i didnt stick around for it. dont worry , you WILL be able to play pong at 60 frames per second . :)

  31. TareX says:

Com’on :) I’m talking FSX, ProEvoSoccer, and FPS games like COD4, Crysis.

I just need to know the framerate and detail level… I bet they would look great if played smoothly on this packed screen.

  32. zorri says:

Hello Chippy, did you try to sketch with some stylus on the screen (not only toutch)? Is it possible to ink?

  33. chippy says:

Inking is not really possible on this soft-touch screen.

    Steve.

  34. zorri says:

I see on the Mobilx site that the device has 60 GB HDD 5400rpm ?

  35. john D says:

i doubt this could play crysis or COD4 at any resolution. I witnessed it playing a racing game called GTI yesterday fairly smoothly, and it’s a game from 2005. You could probably expect to play COD2 maximum. Probably games from 2-6 years ago, nothing recent unless it doesn’t require much graphic wise.

  36. fixup says:

Temperature is not a much concern for this one, because it has no palm bay. Some old good designs, such as Thinkpad X and Libretto, put the battery underneath the palm bay, very comfortably cool.

  37. SirAuron says:

As it seems there is much more life in the comments than in the forum concerning this particular device:

    http://www.umpcportal.com/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=3719&forum=30

I am mostly wondering about wether the screen is usable while on train or outside how much I have to pay in total if I get it shipped to Germany.

  38. GUMBEE says:

Hey chippy just wanted to know if the cpu in this laptop is better then the via nano cpu that might go in to the new mini 2133 cuze i kinda on the wall with this one and the mini that could have the nano

  39. chippy says:

In theory, this can crunch data faster than a 1.6Ghz Nano but only when running on external power. UNder battery power, it clocks down to 800Mhz – About Atom 1.6Ghz performance.

  40. HKG says:

Hello Chippy, could you open the bottom cover and check if 8mm thick 1.8″ HDD can be installed or not? Thanks

  41. SirAuron says:

@Gumbee: An AMD Turion DualCore is way faster than the new nano cpu.

  42. Ian says:

Wow! Conics are now offering a version of the note with a 64gb SSD drive (38 mbps write speed)!! I’ts double the price of the HDD version though.

  43. chippy says:

OK. I think thats a conics retro fit.

My idea is to use my cheap SSD mod.
    http://www.umpcportal.com/2008/05/how-to-improve-the-q1-ultra-umpc-by-replacing-the-hdd-with-a-cf-ssd/

    40MBs R/W

    Steve

  44. Ian says:

Oh and there’s now a Canadian / US reseller taking pre-orders too:

    http://www.buildyourumpc.com/Everun-Note-p/everun%20note.htm

  45. MMF says:

When will the black version be available, plus, is the RAM upgradable? the white one is sweet but the black looks much better IMHO. how scalable is the device…

  46. chippy says:

    First versions will be white.
    Its a dissapointment I know.
Maybe they do that to throttle the initial demand. Just a thought.

    Steve

  47. Ian says:

OK, Chippy, I’ve got to ask, where did you get this intel? Important because there’s a reseller now saying they will have the note in BLACK arriving next Monday!!! Can they be telling the truth????

  48. MMF says:

Thank Chippy for the reply, what do you think about scalability, HD upgrade, RAM and video card, what are your thoughts on these things. can we increase them..
