Inspiron Mini 9 3G and SSD info

Posted on 08 September 2008

Jkk has uncovered some additional information regarding the type of SSDs used in the Mini 9, and the 3G situation. When it comes to SSDs, it seems as though the performance will depend on the capacity. Jkk (who certainly knows something about these SSDs) notes that the 16GB Mini 9 will use STEC’s (fast) SSD module, while the 4/8GB models will use a (slower) Intel SSD. The STEC SSD apparently has a read/write of 85/25, while the Intel module sits at 38/10, which is the same SSD used in the […]

Why buy a MID?

Posted on 08 September 2008

An interesting article over at PCMag.com has author Tim Bajarin asking “Who would want to buy a Mobile Internet Device?”. Throughout the article, Tim explains that he doesn’t quite see the function of a MID, or how it might fit a consumer’s needs. After reading the article, I think this is another example of how over-defining a category can confuse consumers, and even those who closely follow news in the market. This is another question of who is defining what, but it really comes down to what the consumers think. […]

JKK tests Eee SSDs

Posted on 07 September 2008

Fed up with the slow speed of the SSD in your Eee PC? Want more storage than what your device currently has? Look no further. Jkk has received a bunch of different Mini PCIe SSD from an online retailer and put them to the test. There are two different types – the faster and more expenisve SLC, and the slower and cheaper MLC. Unfortunately Asus uses the MLC one on some of its devices which results in them being quite slow. If you feel confident enough to swap the disk […]

Dell Inspiron Mini 9 for $99? I wish.

Posted on 06 September 2008

Dell is running what seems to be a pretty good promo to get the Mini 9 in the hands of consumers at a cheaper price. Apparently Dell is offering this ‘deal’ for a very short period of time, as announced on their blog: If you can wait until 6 a.m. Central tomorrow, Sept. 5, you’ll be able to get a Mini for only $99 with the purchase of a Studio 15, XPS M1530 or XPS M1330 laptop through 6 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9 (U.S. only). Sounds great right? Well all […]

Inside the Inspiron Mini 9

Posted on 05 September 2008

As most of you know by now, Dell launched the Inspiron Mini 9 netbook yesterday. Jkk has come across the service manual for the unit on Dell’s site.  The manual shows some good internal pictures and there is a lot of talking in the blogosphere right now about how easy it could be to upgrade the unit’s hardware (never a bad thing). Vicente, a ultra mobile PC Portal reader, wants to know whether the SSD in the Mini 9 has 100% high speed flash storage, or if they will pull […]
