CCC Week. Challenges 16-17

Posted on 15 October 2008

I’ve been trying to work out what the most popular device would be to serve all the CCC requests I’ve had but it’s really hard. If I was an OEM designing a UMPC, MID or Notebook I’d be pushed to come up with a design that would suit even 30% of the people wanting a solution.  Take these two for example…

Live session tonight. Aigo focus.

Posted on 14 October 2008

As always, late notice but the spontaneous sessions are always the best. JKK will be online with the Aigo MID, Everun Note and other devices from from about 2130 CEST (after the Apple event I believe) and I’ll be joining soon after that with the Gigabyte M912M. See you later on the live page Live session: 2130 CEST (Berlin, GMT+2)

CCC Week. Challenges 13-15

Posted on 14 October 2008

If there’s one thing that’s clear, its that peoples ideal devices and ideal scenarios differ wildly. From the CarPC to the mobile office through sofa-surfer and travelers companion.  Its encouraging to see people really focusing on their requirements though because this is the first thing you need to get clear before you buy a UMPC. Here’s three more customer challenges after the ‘is that a ultra mobile PC in your pocket’ images…        2", 4", 4.8", 4.8" (in hand,) 7" and…

ASUS Eee 901Go is A Killer device. (This is not a review)

Posted on 14 October 2008

There’s no doubt that the low-cost netbook trend will affect pro-mobile sales. It’s likely to affect laptop sales too. People in the industry are already hinting to me that they have problems. OEMS can’t price and position pro-mobile devices with confidence and specialist resellers have problems choosing which devices to stock. They don’t want to be left with a shelf full of out-of-fashion netbooks. There are still a few areas where netbooks can’t compete with UMPCs; built-in 3G, size and weight advantages, touchscreens, alternative form factors and rugged builds which […]

JKK got the Aigo MID.

Posted on 14 October 2008

I’m in the middle of writing an article about the T-Mobile / ASUS 901Go (the free 3G-enabled netbook) and am looking at an unboxing video wondering who would buy the Aigo MID, the Mobile Internet Device that doesn’t include mobile Internet due to lack of a 3G module. I’m also asking myself, ‘Where’s the damn Gigabyte M528 that does have the 3G!’ After I’ve finished the 901 article and posted some more customer challenge responses, I’ll watch the 12-minute video and join JKK for a live session tonight. Hopefully we […]

Sony XPERIA X1 unboxed on video

Posted on 14 October 2008

The XPERIA X1 [Portal page] which Kornel got to play with several months ago is getting more attention as of late. Below is a video of the XPERIA X1 getting unboxed and in addition to a size comparison to the HTC Touch Pro, there is also a short bit of UI action. The packaging looked pretty simple, but good enough. A smartphone like the X1 may seem a bit out of place here, but we have been hoping that the Windows Mobile shell that Sony designed would help the X1 […]

WiMAX Nokia N810 finally available

Posted on 14 October 2008

It seems like it has been forever since we heard about the WiMAX equipped N810, and yet the device wasn’t made available… until now that is. Probably owing the delay to the fact that the WiMAX network was hardly even a reality until a few weeks ago when they started testing WiMAX in Baltimore, Maryland (or they might have been waiting until October to match the black and orange color scheme…). The N810 WiMAX edition appears to be finally purchasable directly from Nokia at a price of $443 (after an […]

CCC Week. Challenges 10-12

Posted on 13 October 2008

We continue with the Q&A session with a challenge from A Nonymous (!) CCC 10. A Nonymous. Mr N is looking for a mini notebook or convertible tablet as an ‘all-round replacement’ capable of serious document reviewing, playing CDs/DVDs. Mr Nonymous sums-up by saying it should be a ‘home office which can be carried on the road.’ Price range, 600 – 1200 (US dollars assumed) Wow! You don’t ask for much do you Mr N. I assume you want it all-in one so we’re basically looking at a small laptop […]
