Theres a new Sony teaser ad live on the Sony New Zealand website which promises a product that will change the way you look at laptops. It could be the product that went through the FCC a few weeks ago.
Sony teaser site says “revolutionary new VAIO” coming January 9th – Engadget
Does that mean the Everun Note is really a UMPC?
I call it a umpc but that doesn’t mean it really is a umpc!
It ill be interesting to see what happens ith the Sony device.
Steve
Well it looks like the WAIT ISN’T OVER just yet :)
http://www.sony.co.nz/vaio/thewaitisover
Looks like 802.11b, 802.11g, 802.11n (HT20 and HT40) I’m not familiar with the HT myself, is that 2.4 and 5Ghz?

Netbook or MID?
I guess these numbers are taken from the Engadget estimated
http://www.small-laptops.com/2008/12/01/pcg-1p1l-and-pcg-1p2l-sonys-vaio-netbook/
Playing with PS a bit myself I come up with these kind of porportions
http://www.sizeasy.com/page/size_comparison/20838-PCG-1P1L-vs-PCG-my-estimate-vs-UX
Purple being the one I get from using numbers given here:
https://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/prod/oet/forms/blobs/retrieve.cgi?attachment_id=1039180&native_or_pdf=pdf
Though obvious the thickness of 20mm is just as much a wild guess as Engadget.
For the Sony teaser, there is 2 choices :
– the PCG-1P1L which you have put the picture here and we talk about here :
http://www.netbook3g.com/netbook/un-notebook-cdmaevdo-chez-sony-netbook
– the PCG-4R1L, we have talk about it :
http://www.netbook3g.com/netbook-3g/pcg-4r1l-un-autre-notebook-sony-avec-3g-et-gps-integres
dimensions are approximatively 27cm x 20cm, it has Wifi, bluetooth, 3G et GPS with Gobi chipset and run on Windows
So, for the January 9th, it could be one of these …
Jeff
If this picture we’ve been seeing (above) is the PCG-1P1L is anything close to accurate there’s no way it could be 270mm and 200mm as that would be very close to square!? It also doesn’t make any sense the other netbooks are in the range of 200+mm wide and just between 100 and 200 deep.
See that “Dimensions estimées : 25cm * 12cm” at http://www.netbook3g.com/netbook/un-notebook-cdmaevdo-chez-sony-netbook is a lot mooe like it!
I’m not sure why they’d put this is CM though it’d be more common to use mm.
I guess they are saying ( http://www.netbook3g.com/netbook/un-notebook-cdmaevdo-chez-sony-netbook ) thatit would be similar in size to the UMID?
http://jkkmobile.blogspot.com/2008/11/meet-umid-mid-315g-super-mini-laptop.html
Give me that with 3G from Sony and I think I’d be happy for a while!!!
27cmx20cm is for another notebook just appeared last week-end, the PCG-4R1L, not the PCG-1P1L above.
Follow my second link http://www.netbook3g.com/netbook-3g/pcg-4r1l-un-autre-notebook-sony-avec-3g-et-gps-integres and you will see information about an other “notebook” from Sony appeared on December 19th, but you don’t heard about it anywhere else because we was the only one who talk about it (we don’t know why) :
So, the Jan 9th, we could discover two new Sony “notebook” : an UMPC with the PCG-1P1L and a netbook with the 4R1L
Jeff
But the 270mmx200mm (27x20cm) sounds more like some tablet or something, it doesn’t sound like dimensions of any Netbook/Laptop or MID!?
http://event.asus.com/eeepc/comparison/eeepc_comparison.htm
Dimensions for Asus Eee PC 1000* are 266mm(W) x 191.2mm(D), so this Sony 4R1L is just a little bigger than the Asus Eee PC 1000*. But we haven’t enough information to tell exactly in which category it should be classified. Perhaps, this is a classic ultra-portable VAIO with high cost…
The good news is the integrateg 3G modem with this 2 models, I wish for 2009 an integrated 3G modem for each new MID/UMPC/netbook/laptop ;-)
Ok yeah those EEE 1000 are getting into the size where I’ve lost interest, but you’re right it would be “up” in that size. I have however had at least one from each generation of the Sony “subnotebooks” they’ve had over the past few years, prior to the advent of the Netbooks.
Anyone have ideas where this pic is from?
http://www.netbook3g.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/sony-pcg-4r1l-label-location-t.jpg
I think its from the FCC too. Appeared in the past week
OK but taken down (from FCC) I guess?
Yes, I know where the pic come from, I wrote the post ;-)
Yes, it comes from FCC :

https://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/prod/oet/forms/blobs/retrieve.cgi?attachment_id=1046797&native_or_pdf=pdf
There you go thanx! Don’t know why I didn’t see/find it on there!
the revolutionary new feature is that it will lose the touchpad/palmrest instead replacing it with an “optical bar” (not optical point) which will allow for multitouch input.
used 1 in the lab a few weeks ago (not on the Sony) & they work fantastic.
I’m willing to bet my apartment its not a netbook. Sony will be the last consumer electronics company to devour themselves by slicing their margins and pricing a mini-note at ASUS/ACER prices. Sony are well into the miniturisation process already and have substantial experience with the TX and UX series lappies. A netbook would devour their margins and their premium “marquee” brand status. I’m intrigued to see what they will be releasing and precisely what bracket it will fall into. I sense it will be a mixture of UX and netbook – but whatever it is, it will have that premium Sony price tag!
Where is your apartment? :)
A Netbook doesn’t have to cost $500 to be a Netbook by definition its a “light-weight, low-cost, energy-efficient, highly portable laptop suitable for web browsing, email and general purpose applications — primarily noted for its small form factor.” so some would argue that Sony has already had Netbooks since they’ve had sub notebooks with SSD but by no means were they “low-cost” so if Sony brought out a computer that would be low-cost by Sony standards it would be a Netbook, right? Also please don’t think that just because the price is lower that you won’t make good profit margins just look at the Sony PSP it’s listed for $169 and $199 on their own webpage http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&categoryId=8198552921644568895 though I’m no gamer, the fact that they can sell this hardware for $169 I think is VERY LOW PRICE, no?
And little did they know, that Sony’s diminuitive device wa, in all actuality, a touch slate.
One can dream, no?
The first few minutes in the Sony video interview below confirms their strategy:
– current netbooks are too small – conclusion = there’s will be bigger
– current netbooks aren’t small enough to be pocketable = they are committed to pocketable devices as well still (good)
So as others have posted above I think we are looking at a very small device and a bigger than netbook sized device but still smaller than the TT
http://gadgets.boingboing.net/2008/12/22/dont-hold-your-breat.html
Having tried to use the “info” available so far it would appear as this (smaller) device won’t be any smaller (perhaps slightly bigger!) than the Sharp (Willcom) D4, and I believe I’m alone when I say if that’s the case my interest is next into non existant, oh yes I’ll still be following it but wouldn’t buy it. I mean the Sony UX’s were ok thoigh a bit thick, this one seems to be a lot wider :(
Teaser now on Sony Japan showing the actual size. It’s another Raon UMPC!
http://www.vaio.sony.co.jp/
Yeah, it seems like Everun Note done right (hopefully!). Which means more width(to accommodate an adequate keyboard), less depth and thickness (to fit into the woman’s purse), and a possibly ingenious way to dispense with the trackpad. For me, the best way to do the latter would be a high quality capacitive touchscreen ala iPhone. What we desperately need for devices of this kind however, is a finger-friendly OS…
I don’t know I feel the Netbook/MID category division as we have seen it so far is quite decent with the EEE 7xx/9xx being in the smaller end of Netbooks, but MIDs being for THUMBBOARDING. I have a hard time seeing devices like the Everun Note catching on much, why? Because there’s basically two category of people, those who WANT/NEED to be able to touch type, and then the other (like myself) that really aren’t going to settle for anything (in the long run) that isn’t pocketable.
So for me these devices that aren’t really neither (good for touch typing NOR pocketable) lacks the great appeal for either category of customer. For me personally as it stands and with the pricing right now I am ok with having one EEE for the netbooking and the Aigo for MIDing. I’m actually having a harder and harder time seeing ONE device replacing both in the near future.

LOLOL that’s is hilarious! For anyone who knows how imageshack works, should find something quite interesting with that link, there something “random” about that link that just HAPPENED to not be so random! LOL

It seems a high end umpc as it has vista Ultimate.
I don’t know why guys at Sony don’t want to offer any cheapy!
Watch this!

We already did YESTERDAY :) see above a bit…
“Breaking News”
http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/25/sony-p-series-netbook-unveiled-underwhelming/
Would love to go for a Fujitsu (U2010/U30*) instead of a netbook (NC10) but battery life is too low and price too high.I think the Sony will be in the same size/battery life/price category as the Fujitsu, too bad.
Interesting picture:

From here:

If they made it 4″ wide then it might have a chance of being jacket pocket in size then it would revolutionize the way we think of a laptop. But if it is still too large to carry without a bag of some sort it is not that revolutionary at all.
The picture has sth wrong.Look at the red point in the middle.Isn’t it copied from IBM or Lenovo? The upper row has 17 keys! What are they? And just left the arrows there are 11! All in all there are 90 keys? whats going on there? Is it just a fake or ?
Sony picturebook with Atom and without touchpad area. *yawn*
I dont like it,I like the Fujitsu form factor way better.I prefer small and thick devices with less wideness.
It turns out to be a PS’ped picture according to Engadget.
Hi guys
Have you had a look at the Sonystyle uk site? the new beast, the 8″ P notebook that attracted so much attention at CES is priced at 1.368.- pounds sterling.
Beat that…..
