It’s 0600 in Vegas as I write this and the press are stirring. In just a few hours the first of the press-day conferences will be starting when LG kick off at 0800. After LG, it’s non-stop until after the Steve Balmer (MIcrosoft) keynote at 1900. In-between you’ll find Toshiba, Sharp, Cisco, Samsung, Panasonic and Sony doing press events and a ton of PR activity through the normal press channels. There’s also a CntrStage (bloggers) party with live streaming at 1600 local time which should be fun to watch. Image […]

Netbook 3G have lined up a stack of VIA C7-based netbooks that are expected to be shown at the Lunch@Piero’s event on the 9th. VIA are said [cached news item] to have between 10 and 15% of the global netbook market. Most of the sales are outside the western markets so we rarely get to see the big picture. This showcase halps to put some perspective on it. Via (French): Netbook 3G » CES 2009 : VIA présente des netbooks encore avec le VIA C7-M !.

I’m sure we’ll see more pics of this over the next few days but this one (from a set at GottabeMobile) shows the slim casing, the low-profile keyboard and the hinge. The 9″ version of this is said to be under 1KG making it very interesting in my book. I guess it’s not carrying a 6-cell battery (It’s probably using flat Li-Poly batteries to help the design) but if it’s got a 30whr battery, it could be a 3-4hr device if it uses (as indicated by JKK) the Z520 CPU. […]

Update: Building a list of the specs and news references in the product database page. An 8.9″ 2.1lb PC it’s not exactly the type of thing I’d like to have on my car dashboard but it seems that ASUS might be thinking that way. With GPS, touchscreen and an FM transmitter it looks like they’re going for the navigation option. LaptopMag have a short article with information from the ASUS press event that took place at CES a short while ago. I have a similar combination of convertible with GPS […]

If you’re into the discreet component level of MIDs, you might want to check out this press release from NEC. NEC Electronics America, Inc. today announced that it will highlight its power management IC (PMIC) technology at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES®), January 8 11, 2009. The live demonstration will feature NEC Electronics’ PMIC solution for Intel’s next-generation Mobile Internet Device (MID) platform, codenamed Moorestown. NEC were involved with the power management IC’s on Menlow so this is nothing new for them. For us, it might be a chance […]

No specs and not even 100% confirmation that this is the Vaio P but Engadget seem to be confident that they’ve snapped the first photo-of-an-image of the new Vaio P. I’ve corrected the image perspective although it’s still not perfect. The original must have been taken at a strange angle. You can see it at the link below along with the rest of the images. If Engadget are confident, then i’m confident… http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/06/sonys-vaio-p-ultraportable-revealed/

PCWorld have just published an article that gives a nice overview of where the Nano is going. There’s a version ‘3000’ due for Q3 which will be that same as the curent Nano’s but will use an optimised manufacturing process. Then, in Q4, VIA will have a dual-core version ready. In adition, Richard Brown of VIA, says the there’s a new chipset in the works and that the C7 will still be used for the current netbook market. As we thought, the Nano is really going to be for low […]

We still don’t have the list of devices from Intel yet and CES is just about to start so I’m watching carefuly and keeping my fingers crossed that there will be some shiny new devices that Intel can send out way for the tour. I’ve had tip-offs and read news that there’s a new OQO on the cards, a new Samsung ultra mobile PC and a new Sony ultra mobile PC so along with the devices that Intel has already shown in a CES warm-up video , there’s a great […]
