I bumped into Porky Pig at Magic Mountain today while using the OQO Model 2+. He waved at me and pointed at the device. "Is that a mini computer?" his uncostumed photographer asked. Well, with a question like that, how could I not take a moment to explain to him all about MID Moves, Intel, the Atom CPU, and of course MIDs and UMPCs. I could tell from his enthusiastic nodding that he was pretty impressed. Just look at his expression. That pig wants an OQO!

Tomorrow, I’ll be doing some driving. Actually quite a lot of driving. I’ll be driving through 5 countries in about 12 hours and while I do it I hope to keep you updated on where I am, what i’m doing and use a MID to generate and post-process all the info into a nice media stream. One of the challenges will be navigation. Another challenge will be staying online. I’m quite sure that the 3G coverage will be good but i’m also sure that the cost is going to be high. Current […]

In case you were wondering, the answer is yes. Yes, you can take an OQO Model 2+ on a rollercoaster while it’s in sleep mode and have it running just fine after all the sharp turns, drops, loops, rattles, and jostles.

Up until today, I’ve always been indifferent about the inclusion of a rear-facing camera on MIDs and UMPCs. Which ones had it and which ones didn’t was never a concern to me. If I want to take a picture, I used to think, I’ll just use a regular camera or a smartphone. If I want to share those photos, I’ll do it later by transferring them from my camera’s memory card to a computer or emailing them from my phone to a sharing site like Flickr or even directly to […]

It’s overcast here at Six Flags Magic Mountain and based on what the Model 2+’s OLED touchscreen looks like at full brightness right now, a blue sky won’t be the only thing that will be hard to see today. There’s a lot of glare, which I imagine would only be worse if the sun could actually cut through the clouds today, and visibility in general is just poor. The device may not have been designed with outdoor use in mind, of course, but how mobile can you be without stepping […]

I can’t really let the day finish without mentioning the Techcrunch Crunchpad. Although it’s a relatively big and non-mobile tablet, there’s a few things to mention. Mike Arrington’s original focus for the design was web activities so it’s not suprising he’s gone for a PC-based solution. Web-based activities are getting to be some of the most CPU-intensive daily tasks that people do so a strong CPU is a must-have. The VIA Nano is, clock-for-clock, likely to be much more powerful than an Atom so a good choice for processing power […]

While Jenn prepares mind and body for some MID Moves action at fun park in southern California, I’m getting ready for my own MID action. The OQO 2+ (64GB SSD, 1.8Ghz, OLED screen version) arrived today and its siting on a table right now in ‘desktop’ mode. I think it’s fair to say that this is one of the most transparent Vista experiences I’ve had on a UMPC. The 1,8Ghz drive, 2Gb of RAM and fast SSD are really working well together. I’ve written up a few notes at MID […]

As part of the Midmoves.com tour Steve Paine will visit Hamburg for the MBC09. He and I though it would be a fun idea to meet up for a small ‘show off your gadgets’ event which will take place on Thursday evening, 7pm. We will meet at Starbucks Jungfernstieg, which has a beautiful sight over the Alster as well as on the first floor an area with tables where we can spread out all the geeky goodness we cary around with us. Meant to be a “let me have a […]
