Sony Vaio P arrives at Pocketables

The sun is shining out in Pocketables land. I can almost see Jenn’s smile radiating from here, 7500 miles away on the other side of the planet. She’s got the Vaio P and the unboxing and testing has already started.

Unboxing photos’s here.

It looks like the usual stack of Sony apps and try-me-ware is installed so Jenn will probably have some cleaning-up to do before the first impressions come out. She has the 1.3Ghz, 64GB SSD version. I’ve used a similar set-up on the OQO 2+ so if the SSD is fast on the Sony, I know the Vista experience should be bearable for casual use. Certainly if you keep the device in standby, it should be fine for whipping it out of the handbag and checking Google forthe local nail parlour ;-)

The past couple of weeks I have been playing with the idea of getting the Vaio P to replace my Asus EEE, this mainly as I’ve been helping a friend who’s been looking for a FW series, thereof my attention to (one of my favorite brands) Sony.

Now looking at the pictures I was just reminded why it was a huge turn off at CES, the Vista only (no XP support explicitly pointed out by the Sony reps!) I really don’t want Vista especially not on a mobile device of this sort (I don’t dare to call it a Netbook, UMPC, nor MID :)). Wonder how Win7 would be on this. On the other hand my “on-the-go” PC should not have any added factors (such as a new OS) that I am not used to nor tried & tested with all my needs and programs.

Also I must say I really have a hard time with track sticks, on the OQO 2+ thanks to the touch screen I think I could live with it, I did with a couple of 02’s before despite no (passive) touch screen. I must say though the UMID’s “no-touchpad-nor-track-stick” setup is worrying me a bit too (despite touch screen).

Let see how this Vaio P catches on! I think Jenn might just match the target demographic for this device (well to some degree, female tech blogger not being part of that! :))

P.S. I’m mentioning OQO and UMID only from a mouse solution/option only, as for me the Vaio P and (true pocketables like) OQO & UMID for me wouldn’t be the same category product nor purpose.
