JKK’s Enhanced Aigo MID with XP, Extended battery

Posted on 11 February 2009, Last updated on 11 November 2019 by

Oooh. This is close. This is really close to the microblogging device I was talking about earlier today.

Jkk has taken a stock Aigo MID and rebuilt the software with XP embedded, enhanced the battery and even changed the finish of the device. As you’ll see in the video its running very quickly and very smoothly. Jkk has really enhanced the device from a pocketable web browser to a complete mobile productivity sollution. Fantastic!

great job jkk, and again…i think – as we discussed several times already in different articles – right now battery life is the biggest weakness. although, even if XP embedded runs fine, you won’t get any further development in that area by intel. they are pushing midinux and so no drivers will be made.

after all the first impressions, videos etc, i think i decided NOT to buy the compal device. battery is to weak. i’ll get a netbook and wait for new devices to show up in the next months.

    thanks jkk for this video

    I decided the same
A no dockable device is never going to be a productive device.
I don`t think a device can be only mobile it needs to be used with a large monitor to be really productive or else it needs to be used in combination with other PC

Simply amazing, and depressing at the same time. Amazing because of what you were able to achieve with know-how and a goal. Depressing that the OEMs weren’t able to achieve this from the very beginning… Good Job JKK.

  5. Corrupted Mind says:

I’m with Matt… Even though its a slider (I’m a slate fan)… I would pick up one of these in a heartbeat if it was available. I wonder if those pesky OEMs are watching.

Hooray for homebrew! This is very, very close to a device I’d like to own. If Compal just made a new version with a mouse pointer and a double capacity (at least) battery…

Well ok, I’d *like* to have this too, but I’m not ready to pay that much.

The Compal design has a 4.8″ screen, right? If the UMID M1 is usable with its 4.8″ 1024×600 touch screen, I’d like to see one like it on this as well. You can’t shrink the device without making the keyboard smaller anyway, so a 4.1″ screen as per your earlier spec wouldn’t make as much sense.

You hit the nail on the head about battery life. Manufacturers ship products with inadequate battery life because they want their products to sound light and mobile, but that very lightness makes them immobile after only a couple of hours. Give us enough battery life so we don’t feel like we’re running with a short fuse.

You favour WinXp and no doubt many others will as well, but I like the idea of having at least one device that doesn’t need virus checking daily or hourly just to survive in the connected world, so I’m happy to run Linux on it. However, we need more than 4 GB of space for OS or storage.

Also while some people want the keyboard built in, I don’t mind a slate device so long as it has bluetooth so I can connect a small bluetooth keyboard and use that (note to Apple: you fail, because your bluetooth-equipped iPhone can’t even be used with an Apple bluetooth keyboard!).

Great job on the mods, and I look forward to seeing more!

  8. Ben says:

Who ever said you need daily or hourly virus checking? A firewall and smart browsing can work wonders.

  9. Joao Oliveira (BassoPT) says:

    Hello.

First of all I’m writing this post from the aigo, also with xp and i can tell you how much better it is than linux. I tell EFW makes a lot of diference and you wont get the real feeling if it unless you have it your hands!! Aslo, You don’t need to check virus every day if know what you run and what sites you go into.
Battery is not that bad. it’s usable for doing what i need to do on the run… quick stuff. i would be fantastic to have a full day on-line but unfortunately we can. but it’s not the end of the world.

Why i bought the device? because I was very curious about the device. So i was able to sell some other devices i didn’t think were doing anything to me and invested on the aigo. And I’m very positively suprised with it. I using it every day doing my basic, urgent internet needs on it, and i must tell you it has been doing the job really well.

Keep in mind that JKK is a power user and demands a lot more from a device than the regular “Joe”. He is pushing it to the maximun. Even I, I’m pushing a lot and still can live quite well from what it offeres :)

    Joao.

P.S. I might also do some video by the end of this week beginning of the next, with the aigo, some thoughts and quick demonstration how i used every day… trying to give a more end user preceptive view. I will find a way to share it.. check it if you are interested.

    hi joao!

    quick questions:

is everything working on XP Embedded? all drivers available? wifi working?

  11. tanjeraldy says:

    bluetooth?

  12. Joao Oliveira (BassoPT) says:

    Hello,

No wi-fi is not working, yet. Bluetooth works yes! We also need something to control brightness. It’s allways at 100% and that is compromising the the battery, also makes hard to read stuff at low light!

    Joao.

  13. Jason Yip says:

    Hello,

What web browser are you using it appears to handle finger ‘flicking’ really well compared to IE7-8?

    Thanks,

    Jason

  14. chasmic says:

Jason: it’s FF3 with the “grab and drag” extention installed.

  15. Chippy says:

Works very smoothly under XP. Never seems to work well under Vista though.

  16. Ricoks says:

i wonder how Win7 would work on this. The specs will show whether or not Microsoft was accurate in the low resources needed for it.
I’m excited about a device this size. I for one would prefer a tab bigger screen, 1024×600 screen (get rid of the bezel) and perhaps slide a bit more up and make the keyboard a tad larger – more keys too (addt’l row)
Looking at the keys on the Touch Pro, 5 rows, smaller device. just looking at productivity. number row is handy.
I agree that a dock is important. not only does it allow for use with other peripherals, but makes for a much easier place to place, charge, and use for viewing (video)
I’d like to see how it handles youtube flash (SD) and what other videos it’s able to handle.

I would love to try XPe on my Aigo. Can you please give a tutorial on how you got it to work on the Aigo hardware or some pointers to get it working. Thanks

  18. animatt says:

I would also like to see about XPe. This video has really got me interested.
I will post on Jkks site but a nice config file and additional drivers .sld file would be nice to get it working a bit quicker.

My biggest interest is the EWF.
Followed by a more slender XP install.
