After a short phone meeting with some of the guys who worked on the HP Mini 1000 MIE, it was clear that they had a difference target audience in mind than the XP version of the netbook. Though the Mini 1000 MIE is running a custom version of Ubuntu Linux, it is not intended for Linux gurus. It also isn’t mean for power users who need compatibility with Windows applications. HP wanted the Mini 1000 MEI to appeal to consumers who weren’t already deeply involved with specific pieces of Windows […]

This appears to be a significant step forward for Psion in their quest to recover and protect their ‘netbook’ brand and a massive consideration for those running their business in this sector. According to Psion, Google have researched and accept that the ‘netbook’ name belongs to Psion and are going to ban the use of it in adverts. The news comes from JKontherun. …Today Psion let us know that Google has investigated the trademark claim and determined that “netbook inch is indeed a protected trademark. Google does these investigations as […]

Update: It’s more of a placeholder. Pre-order is not possible at the moment… No prices yet but at least we now know that the devices are going to ship at some point in the future. The UMID M1 and Viliv S5 are now in the database at Dynamisn so if you’re keeping a close eye on them, nip over and register for email updates. UMID M1 at Dynamisn Viliv S5 at Dynamisn Both are without 3G support which doesn’t bode well for US band support but well try and get […]

HP has been kind enough to send us a Mini 1000 MIE (Mobile Internet Edition) [Portal page] which is the HP Mini 1000 netbook running a custom Ubuntu interface that is targeted toward consumers that need a simple computing experience. Have a look at the unboxing photos below and check further down for my first impressions. Initial Thoughts There are two things I noticed right away once I got the Mini 1000 MIE out of its packaging. First of all, it is really small. For a device with a 10″ […]

HP recently sent us an HP Mini 1000 MIE (Mobile Internet Edition) [Portal page] netbook to take for a test drive. As the device is running a custom Ubuntu interface which I am tackling from a Linux noob’s point of view, I’m going to try to make my review of this device a rolling one. What does that mean you ask? Well, instead of using the unit for a few weeks and hitting you with a large review, I’m going to break the review down into a few sections and […]

After a hugely busy week where I had to push ‘want to do’ tasks out of the way and put ‘have to do’ tasks in front of me, I’m ready for a beer and a chat.

Another offer from Expansys. This time it’s the Vye S41 which is one of the only netbook-style devices to offer a convertible screen and a DVD drive. We tested this and moaned about the price back when it was 1000 pounds but Expansys in the UK have it on offer now for half of that price making it much better value. It runs the Intel Stealey CPU platform (think 1.3Ghz netbook performance) with 1GB of RAM and an 80GB drive with Vista OS. The DVD drive makes it quite unique […]
