From the Nokia N82 to the Medion Akoya Mini Netbook. Its hard to imagine you can fit 6 more computing devices in the middle. Here’s the line-up of devices at UMPCPortal at the moment and in this 10 minute video I give you a lightning overview of how I use them at the moment. Also available on YouTubeand in WMVand H.264 (choose on page) formats. Again, this is how I use the devices at the moment and of course, no normal person would have this many devices at one time! […]

As much fun as a small device is on the road once it is setup, you need to get it to that point. With or without keyboard may not matter once you are on the go, but you need to get your device to that point. Using the example of the OQO + Windows Live Mesh we will use the slightly hidden but very useful Live Mesh Remote Desktop to achieve our goal. (This procedure of course can be used for other devices running Windows as well using any remote […]

Prepare for a bumpy ride in the MID/Smartphone space. A confusing one too because according to DigiTimes, one of the most successful smartphone designers is getting ready to launch Snapdragon-based phones. The target for launch is Q2 of 2009, later than the planned Toshiba TG01 which is also running Snapdragon. The leaked roadmap from last month show’s two devices that would fit well with the Characteristics of the snapdragon platform. HTC Ihoth and HTC Whitestone W. Well done Amazon. At last an easy to-use selection of ‘no-CD’ games that you can download, test and buy from your mobile PC. Amazon launched their Game Downloads section on Tuesday. It’s a new section of Amazon.com that allows you to choose and trial any of the games and then purchase it if you like it. Game downloads are nothing new but this simple service with this trusted brand could be just what the casual gamers on netbooks want. There are currently just under 600 titles available from various software […]

Welcome to the weekly netbook roundup. In this space every Monday I’ll do my best to highlight netbook news items that might not need their own individual posts but could still be interesting. I’m posting this first WNR today to get things started. History of the Netbook – It seems Ars Technica has started a series called “The State of the Netbook” part one features a good overview of how things came to be and even touches on UMPCs. Sony VAIO P $200 rebate – Verizon offers a $200 rebate […]

It seems like we’ve known about the upcoming 10″ netbook from Acer for a while, but things just got a little bit more official. Netbook3G has found details about Acer’s second netbook at the FCC. Among the images are plenty of internal photos, and it seems like the FCC even has the manual hosted. Swing by Liliputing where Brad has pulled a bunch of the photos and put them in one place for your viewing pleasure. It doesn’t seem like there are many differences between this Aspire One and the […]

Having spend some time around the OQO 2, a short amount of time with the Compal MID (Specs) as well as first steps with the Clarion Mid (Specs + see the longer HD video) I am still the newbie in the bunch of us four. Meaning: It is still not 100% clear to me when a mid is a mid. Is it when there are different components on it and you would not call it a smart phone or a net book? Is it a MID when it has […]

At MBC09, the same question came up again and again as we demonstrated the MIDs. ‘Why do I need another device between a laptop and a mobile phone.’ It’s a valid question but one that is slightly polarised towards thinking about phones and PCs. What many people don’t realise is that there is a raft of devices and gadgets around them that already sit in this middle-tier space. Not only does a full web experience become an opportunity but if you look at all the other gadgets, turning these into […]
