Michael Gartenberg puts an argument forward against MIDsĀ in an article over at PCWorld today but I’ve read his article through at least three times now and I dont get it. Michael says that consumers are willing to carry three devices and lists the voice-capable mobile phone (agreed) and the laptop (agree, for business use.) But where’s the third one? He goes on in his article to say that netbooks can’t replace laptops and I think he’s also saying that MIDs can’t replace phones. I agree. But where’s the third […]

Maybe they jumped the gun several years ago when people set out to fit a full-featured computer that would fit in your pocket… it doesn’t matter though because that is all behind us now. Steve has already shown you the video, but I wanted to make sure it was dually noted, and share a few thoughts of my own. Jkk has taken an Aigo MID, and done some serious customization work, turning it into a very responsive, attractive, and pocketable device. If you like the concept of a real computer […]

There are some classic quotes on this article over at EETimes. It looks like Intel didnt turn up for a panel on MIDs and the competition took the chance to highligh the major issues. “MIDs were conceived by Intel because they couldn’t sell Atom into a cellphone” “You really have two categories: a smart phone getting bigger and a laptop getting a little smaller” They are all valid discussion points and really worth thinking about. I wish I could have been there to show them the Ring of FIE and […]

Oooh. This is close. This is really close to the microblogging device I was talking about earlier today. Jkk has taken a stock Aigo MID and rebuilt the software with XP embedded, enhanced the battery and even changed the finish of the device. As you’ll see in the video its running very quickly and very smoothly. Jkk has really enhanced the device from a pocketable web browser to a complete mobile productivity sollution. Fantastic!

If anyone reading this is planning to go to MWC, do us a favor please. Take your video cam and get hands-on with the Lluon (incorrectly referenced as the Digifriends MID in the video) and the UMID M1. Intel are shipping them over to Barcelona next week for the Mobile World Congress and here’s a teaser video they’ve just put up. Seriously though, if anyone reading this does have time to get hands-on with the UMID, we’d love to hear your opinion.

You’ll recognise some of the MIDs in this video from the MIDMoves tour in Jan but there’s a couple of new ones in there too. The Lluon Mobbit and the UMID M1.

I’ve been thinking about this subject for a while but this post by Robert Scoble has prompted me to get everything written down and finalised. My thoughts about the ideal microblogging device started during the MBC09 conference that I attended as part of the first MIDMoves tour where people were all using either smartphones or PCs to microblog. I couldn’t help thinking there was a better way and of course, as I’m familiar with the area of pocketable productivity, couldn’t help thinking that the latest MIDs would be good so […]

Could there be a clearer indicator that a mobile, Internet-connected, cloud-centric, all-day device is what everyone is expecting? About 300 Journalists attending a press conference in January chose their top themes for CeBIT 2009 and here’s how the results came out. (2008 figures in brackets) Platz 1 GreenIT 29,9% (24,4%) Platz 2 mobiles Internet 18,2% (18,6%) Platz 3 Netbooks (Mini-Notebooks) 11,7% (10,6%) Platz 4 Energieeffizienz 9,1% ( – ) Platz 5 Cloud Computing 7,8% ( – ) Given ‘mobility’ and ‘energy efficiency’ and ‘Could computing’ all contribute towards a green […]
