Maybe its just something that Intel said but it looks like the Atom vs Cortex (ARM V7) fight is continuing into the next round at MWC. ARM have just send out a press release highlighting that there will be a Cortex-A8 processor vs Intel Atom power comparison on the stand at MWC! Note that it say’s ‘power’ comparison. Well it’s not exactly hard to demo that one. The best Intel Atom device takes 3-4W. The best Cortex based devices take about 2W under similar usage scenarios. Simple. The problem is, […]

I’ve been using the HP Mini for several days now and I wanted to give my initial impressions of the custom Ubuntu interface that HP is calling the Mobile Internet Experience. As I explained in another post HP designed the interface with the idea that less tech savvy consumers want to do three main tasks on their computer: browsing, communication, and entertainment. What I’m going to call the ‘home screen’ of the Mini 1000 MIE is really like the desktop of a machine running XP. You can’t minimize or close […]

Pocketables summarised a week with the Vaio P a few days ago and seems quite happy with the device. I’ve been following some discussion between a few owners on twitter too and there’s a lot of positive feedback flying around. One thing that worries me a bit is the 1.3Ghz processor on Vista. Although the SSD seems very fast, I wouldn’t feel comfortable with the heavy stack of Vista processes stealing very valuable cycles from my Firefox experience. I’d be much happier with the relatively thin Windows XP as a […]

The Aigo is gaining in popularity among UMPCPortal visitors. We’re seeing a lot of activity in the forums and some great feedback from owners. As one of the only pocketable devices that gives a full, desktop-style internet experience, it’s not surprising! One of our forums members, ‘Bassopt’, has bought an Aigo p8888w (3G version) and has documented his initial impressions and his thoughts after converting it to run Windows XP. You can read what he thinks of the stock build and about his Windows XP experiences below. A big thanks […]

With a base memory of 512MB, a Linux OS and the 1.1Ghz processor, the $500 local price reported by (Via Lazion) indicates that there’s going to be a wide range on pricing for the UMID M1 MID/UMPC Add an estimated 70 for XP, 100 for 1.3Ghz, 50 for another 1GB and 120 for a 3G module and it brings the pricing up around 850 dollars for a high-end model. It’s going to seem quite high to a lot of people but in reality, it’s not. $850 is still cheaper than […]

Take a moment to read about the audience that HP had in mind when they designed the Mini 1000 MIE. Knowing that HP intended for the computer to be used by those that are less computer savvy, I let my sisters take the unit on a test-drive for a few hours. My sisters are still in their early years in high school and generally use the computer for social networking, word processing, listening to music, and viewing/editing photos. I asked them to try the Mini 100 MIE for a few […]
