A few days ago I had an idea for simple ‘g_rouping’ on Twitter and announced a new Twitter user as a gathering point for MID and ultra mobile PC friends. There’s no sign-up needed, no passwords to enter and no 3rd parties involved. All you do to join the group is (be a twitter user and) follow the user g_ultramobilepc. 70 people have already signed up so all you need to do now is take a look at the ‘following’ list (I’ve weeded out a few bots and spammers so […]

This is a short but revealing bit of info. Inventec, the worlds fourth largest laptop manufacturer (and company that abandoned the ‘UMPC’ term last year!) has highlighted that mobile communications which lie ‘somewhere between handsets and notebooks’ will be one of two new growth drivers for the company. CEO Richard Lee also added that development is still at an early stage. Inventec to strength mobile communcation and software product lines in 2009. Clearly the MID segment is seen as an important area to put research into. Mobile phone expectations are […]

An interesting story over at Kotaku talks about a new service called OnLive. The vision of OnLive is to bring processing intensive gaming to low end hardware, a sort of on-demand gaming service. The way it works is essentially opening a video stream from the OnLive server to an OnLive client application on your computer. Your inputs would be sent to the server, and all of the game’s processing would happen on the server and the results would be streamed to your computer. The idea is actually not new, we […]

Jkk, the master of mobile modding, is always quick to point out internal shots from the latest hardware. This time, he found some shots of the UMID M1 [Portal page], which Chippy just recently wrote his hands on thoughts over at MIDMoves. Unfortunately the tiny laptop form-factor device won’t be that easy to mod considering the RAM and even the SSD is soldered to the motherboard. Jkk mentions that a 3G mod won’t be easy either as the UMID M1 isn’t using a PCI-E 3G modem. [ultra mobile PC Fever] […]

Mobilx kindly sent over a set of images showing how they installed 3G in the Gigabyte T1028M. Apparently everything went smoothly due to the pre-wired antenna and SIM holder. I’m getting excited for netbooks again!!! Check out the full gallery here. The T1028 is expected to ship at end of April. (See this article for pricing info and links)
