Weekly netbook roundup 3/23

Posted on 23 March 2009

Welcome to this week’s netbook roundup. In this space every Monday I’ll highlight netbook news items that might not need their own individual posts but may still be interesting. Dell Mini 10 Unboxed, Compared to HP Mini 1000 A nice unboxing of the Dell Mini 10 [Portal page], and comparison to the HP Mini 1000. I still haven’t gotten my hands on a Mini 10 so this video was quite appetizing. Gigabyte Promotional Videos for Upcoming Netbooks Liliputing points out three videos released by Gigabyte on YouTube which promote their […]

Performance – Sony VAIO P

Posted on 23 March 2009

I’ve had the VAIO P for a few weeks now and it’s time to look at the performance of the unit. You may recall that this is the top-end model: 1.86GHz Atom CPU, 128GB SSD, 2GB of RAM, and running Windows Vista (see more detailed information on the Portal page). This particular configuration is only available in Japan at the moment, but can be bought from places like Dynamism. The VAIO P runs Vista, which most people recognize to be quite the resource hog, and feel that it isn’t optimal […]

A Wishlist for Mauku

Posted on 22 March 2009

I’m sorry if this appears a little too detailed for a news post on UMPCportal but I really need to write my thoughts down before I forget them. For those that don’t know what Mauku is, its a Twitter and Jaiku client for Maemo devices like the Nokia N810. I’m a big fan and its one of my most used applications on the device but its falling behind with it’s implementation of Twitter. I need more! I contacted the developer recently to ask about status and he kindly wrote back […]

Thoughts From SXSW – The Impression of Hardware

Posted on 20 March 2009

It used to be the rule that a stand at a trade show would need ‘Booth Babes’ to attract the attention of the thousands of people at a conference. SXSW Interactive is not like that… what attracts the attendees in the Austin Convention Center are shiny boxes that go ping. And the MID based devices the team was toting around the floors of SXSW. Sitting down at a table, and opening up one of the Qwerty keyboard devices caused a lot of oohs and ahhs at the size. Unlike a […]

Ellie Checks-out Chippy's Little MID

Posted on 20 March 2009

In another MID open-table session, Ellie Rountree of Rocketboom exposes my lack of knowledge about new software products launched at SXSW (For the record, this was day 1!) We take a look at the UMID MBook and the Fujitsu Loox which was getting a lot of attention due to it’s Tokidoki screen graphics.

Chris Brogan's MID session at SXSW.

In one of our mid-day UMPC and MID open-table sessions at SXSW, social media strategist Chris Brogan dropped by and spent some time discussing details and asking good questions about the devices we had
