Viliv S5 UMPC Now Available for Pre-order with SSD (32, 128GB) and 3G

We’ve been slightly distracted by the X70 EX over the last week but next in line for some tender love and testing is the ViliV S5 Premium Air. The 32GB SSD version with the built-in 3G HSPA (high speed upload + download) modem. Where the Viliv S5 with HDD was good, the SSD is even better. The change to SSD is very noticeable and if you an stretch to finding the extra $50, we thoroughly recommend it not just for speed but for additional ruggedness too. Built-in 3G is a matter of taste. Personally I’m still a fan of built in 3G as it’s far more reliable than tethering but you have to pay for it. Another $150 in this case. Considering you can build a 4-6hours personal server/hotspot for all your other Wifi devices though, I’d say it’s worth it for people looking for the smallest tablet ultra mobile PC solution.

    “and if you an stretch”?

128 GB SSD, whew! The S5 3G is still nice even after seeing the X70. If it (they) only had a mouse pointer…

  3. tmarks11 says:

    +1

no mouse? not for me. Pity… because otherwise I would have already ordered one.

  4. anon says:

Chippy, revise the fourth sentence; something is amiss.

  5. f1nal says:

~360€ for the 128GB SSD Upgrade! uhhh quite expensive, isn’t it?

  6. men in black says:

IMO, 32G Fast SSD with 3G should be enough for my use. :)

  7. LeeN says:

If you break down the prices you get :

    $599 + $50 32GB SSD
    $599 + $150 3g + $50 32GB SSD
    $599 + $150 3g + $550 128GB SSD

On ebay, 128GB zif SSDs run between $460 to $500, and they are too big to fit in the viliv s5, supposedly they would be small enough if you remove the shell, but no one has had any luck with these drives to work with the Viliv S5. As a matter of a fact, I only know of 1 guy who has installed an 64GB SSD, and they are saying they had to go into some weird mode in order for the drive to be used and that mode is slow.

So $550 doesn’t seem all that bad.

Also, they updated the X70 pre-order page with the 128GB SSD + 3G option:

  9. Jerry says:

As nice as the S5 is with SSD, the fact that Viliv has an S5-like model out there being prototyped with a slide keyboard is enough to put me off buying the current model now. Let the early adopters waste their money.

  10. Velik says:

they’re not wasting their money if they dont want a slide out keyboard :/

  11. DrNick says:

So it is going to be a slide out keyboard? Where did you find that out? Was there any more info available? I haven’t heard anything about it and I was hoping to find something out.

  12. Velik says:

i think i saw that the we can manually add the 3g module to the s5. can the same be done for the x70. also, where was the 3g chip obtained from? viliv?

  13. Midfever says:

I found that the 3G version with 32GB SSD is available in ebay:

What time can I recieve if I do the pre-order from Dynamism?

  14. Dual Core says:

    Hi,
does the 32GB SSD model have the extra connector (mini pci-e) for the 3G board?
(or any other mini pci-e board…)

  15. Dual Core says:

I’m talking about the model without 3G built-in…

    http://www.simplyelectronics.net/mainproduct.php?pid=7118
    …does anybody know those guys????
I suppose we can skip the coustom’s axe, just ordering from those, but one thing puzzeled me bellow the photo of S5:
…Picture is for illustration purposes only…????
This could mean that YOU ORDER WHAT YOU SEE BUT YOU GET SOMETHING ELSE?????

  18. nomax says:

    @Gymakos:
This is just a standard text so that you cannot sue the shop, when the item only has a “generic” picture with the listing. It says “Viliv S5” so they have to sell the original stuff. Just my 5 cents…

  19. yamete888 says:

I was wondering, is the $649 modem from Dynamism (Viliv S5 Premium-S – Intel Atom Z520 1.33GHz, 1GB Ram, 32GB HD Solid State HD, GPS, Windows XP Home) the same as Viliv S5 Air-READY, which doesn’t show up anymore on http://www.myviliv.com/eng/product/s5.asp

So in short, does the $649 model have the sim card reader & mini-pci slot for 3G card built-in so that I can install my own 3G card?

    THanks!

  20. charlton says:

chippy, 3g hsdpa is very nice with this small computer, a true mobility.
but from what telco allows 3g connection with this 3g viliv?
can i use my sim card for tmobile blackberry curve for viliv 3g?
does tmobile allow this , not signing up another $1,440 data plan?

  21. Roy says:

With the inclusion of a 3G modem, is it possible we have the first WinPhone? Is software included or can XP be used (via BluTooth) to make voice calls? Or, is there a commercially available program to do this?
    ANYTHING BUT iPHONE!
Thanks for all the great work you do for the portable computing community, Steve.

  24. Another guy says:

I need a thumb keyboard. On-screen touch keyboards are VERY uncomfortable for anything else than URL typing. I am waiting for the Vilin N5 or the 3G version of the UMID M2. As soon as either of those are out, I am a customer.
