s7 You’ve undoubtedly seen coverage of Viliv’s solid S5 [Portal page] and X70 [Portal page] UMPCs lately. They have been topping the popularity charts here at ultra mobile PC Portal over the last several weeks. Viliv seems to be on a roll, after churning out both the S5 and X70, Viliv is starting to push out the Viliv S5, a 7 inch tablet style UMPC.

Full specs, links, and details on the Viliv S7 Portal page.

The Korean version of their website has recently been updated with some content promoting the upcoming Viliv S7, and while a release date hasn’t yet been announced, it shouldn’t be too much longer before the S7 lands, judging by how quickly the S5 and X70 were released in relation to each other.

Viliv claims that the S7 will offer users 9.5 hours of basic computing, or 7 hours of video playback. The whole package will be under 800g making the S7 quite portable. There will be three different models of S7 (similar to the Asus Eee T91) which will all ship with Windows XP, a 1.33GHz Z520 Atom CPU, and 1GB of RAM. The three models will differ in little more than HDD/SSD option, and one with a DMB receiver. Those models are as follows:

  • I-LOG HX: 60GB HDD ($583)
  • I-LOG 3X: 32GB SSD ($639)
  • D-LOG 3X: 32GB SSD / DMB receiver ($679)
*USD prices calculated from listed KRW price using current exchange rate.

Any of the three models can be equipped with WiBro (the Korean version of WiMax).

As for an international model: the English Viliv site shows the S7 as having all the same specs, though there will be a choice of WiMAX or HSDPA for 3G connectivity.

    ahhh, at a long last!
i’m only worried that by the time this sweetie becomes available in europe they’ll roll out hybrid lcd/e-ink displays to mass production and i’ll have to wait another year until there are devices like s7 utilizing those screens…
i wonder why wouldn’t they make the screen full size of the lid with as thin a bezel as it gets?

  7. Megg says:

Well, the price isn’t exactly student friendly, though I suppose I might have to suck it up and buy it anyway:)

  8. Ben says:

To be honest, I thought the price was pretty good considering what you are getting. A UMPC like this just a year or two back around have been around $1500.

  9. Ben says:

Oh and definitely got gotten ‘9.5 hours’ of battery life!

Hopefully dynamism will announce the S7 in the next few months. I’d most likely pick up the $639 version since DMB is pretty much useless outside of Korea.

As chhh already noted the border of the screen is big and awful then when it’s closed..the screen side is shorter than the keyboard side…
    Definitely a cheap design!
The only good aspect is the long battery life…

For me the big bezel isn’t really a big issue. Sure it looks not that stylish, but on the other hand you have enough space for your thumbs when using it in tablet mode (otherwise you would touch the screen while holding it).
I’m also wondering what happened to the built-in GPS module which was mentioned in earlier specs. I couldn’t find any information about it in the current specs. Also I would like to know which connections the Multi I/O port will support.
I guess I just have to be patient until there is a full review available :-)
    So long.

Interestingly I found the following YouTube movie made on MWC 2009 in Barcelona. Its been incorrectly edited to imply its the X70 but in fact its a quick overview of the S7 :-)

Okay I have a small problem here. In myviliv website (english version) X70 is 210*117*22.5 and S7 is 210*117*26 but in umpcportal the sizes are a little different for S7 228/117/25 mm. Which one is the right one? I know, I know 2cm is not a big deal but I want to have a pretty realistic image of them both, cause I want to choose one of them, if X70 wins then I won’t wait for S7 and order one but if S7 wins then I have to wait. As a matter of fact I may wait anyway for a X70 vs S7 video.

    I second that,size comparison between S5,X70 and S7 is needed urgently. :)
