This is strange. I was thinking about the 1.86Ghz version of the Atom CPU this morning and wondering why there hadn’t been many devices using it. The OQO 2+ was the only device I’ve ever tested with it and it worked well, even with windows Vista! The first story I find on Yahoo News this morning is one about the OQO 2+ sales on Ebay. We’ve already reported on one that sold for 4.5K after the company went down but it seems that there’s another one on ebay now, presumably […]

Trying to analyse mobile device requirements is one of my favourite pastimes and it’s the reason I started blogging so when Michael Gartenberg asks ‘how many devices are you willing to carry and what are they?’ I feel compelled to answer in detail. In his Slashgear column Michael talks about research his company has done into how many devices people will carry that indicates there’s a ‘bell’-curve’ of numbers ranging from one to three with people moving to a situation where they own more devices and choos to carry devices […]

Viliv S7 Originally uploaded by umpcportal.com Despite a ton of competition from cheaper netbooks, this 800gm 1.3Ghz Atom-based convertible UMPC has me quite excited. I’ve tested the keyboard and it’s excellent but the main thing is the super-efficient build. Viliv are saying that it will playback videos for 7 hours on one charge. That means at least 5 hours online time. UMPCPortal should be getting one for testing soon so i’m really looking forward to it.

Pocketables have been tipped-off on a slick looking, slate-style, MID-like device that could be running Android. There really isnt much to go on here but I like the form factor at least. Give it some power under the hood and it should do quite a nice job with Android. If you have any info on this one, make sure you let us or Pocketables know in the comments. What’s that you say? Next Apple Tablet? Give over! More images at Pocketables: Unidentified Android MID makes an appearance.

Our UMPC-loving friends over in Hong Kong, UMPCFever, are reporting that the S7 will launch on Friday 21st August. Some highlights and images of the device below. I’m sure UMPCFever will be getting hold of pricing and giving hands-on reports soon. We’re hoping to get the S7 here at UMPCPortal very soon too. Reading the press release info it looks like it will launch with a 3G option, SSD options, data transfer capability, haptic feedback for the OSK, ultra-bright screen, 1.3mp webcam and a new user interface called Shuttle. The […]

Just when I thought everything had gone quiet, up pops a new 4.8†800×480 MID!

We first got wind of two Inkia ultra-mobile devices a month ago when we saw a few renderings and some specs but it seems that at least the 5 inch version has made it through a sample run and out to some bloggers. There’s an English hands-on write up at Shanzai.com We’re looking at a fairly basic MID here with a 1.1Ghz Atom CPU, 16GB SSD, 1GB RAM and naturally, the ability to run Linux or Windows. The sample price is around $300 which indicates to me that an end-user […]

I know its been a while, but I’ve been waiting to get my hands on a full tablet PC so that I could do better demos than simply using my Sony VAIO UX180 and showing you what’s happening using a monitor as I have done in the past. Hopefully you will agree that the format of this video demo is better than those that I did previously! But beside all of that, have a look at the Crayon Physics Deluxe video demo. The game works great with touchscreens and there […]
