I’ve just had a press release from Archos in Germany which reminds me that the Archos 9 is going to be available from tomorrow.
In the press event at IDF last month we learned that the Archos 9 would launch in the U.S. for $499 but it but we couldn’t confirm EU availability and price. The press release today confirms that it will be available in the Archos online shop [German version] from tomorrow for 499 Euro.
Two additional ‘supermodel’ versions will also be available. The first will have a DVB-T receiver built-in and the second, a 3.5G module. No pricing has been released for these.
The Archos 9 has been one of the top products in the portal since we reviewed it at IDF last month so clearly there’s a lot of interest in it. We’re trying to get hold of a review model from U.S. and E.U. offices and hope to bring you a live session / review very soon. In the meantime, have a look at my overview video and check out the full specifications along with other Archos 9 content on the product page.

This is good news, I really hope this devices will be released tomorrow…now what to buy…5″ Android device….9″ Tablet PC….
I’m debating whether to buy this and return my Asus T91…
I guess I’ll decide when there’s more feedback available on the device.
Problems with the T91?
I had an issue with the an imperfection on the stylus that would occasionally create a “compass point” type scratch. It was really wierd because there wasn’t anything obvious on the stylus. It happened 4 times over the first month of owning it. I think I worked out that it was the plastic edge near the tip (the molding line).
I ended out sending it into Asus…worst decision I ever made. It has been lost in shoddy repair facilities for almost 2 months! I’ve posted the whole story under t91 in the eeeuser forum if interested. http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?id=77290
After this experience I think I will be moving onto other umpc manufacturers.
No problems, I love the T91, but I’m looking for something a little lighter. My primary use is for reading, and I find after using it for an hour or so the device gets a little uncomfortable to hold.
I’m also looking for a device, that doesn’t have a keyboard, but also has an option to add one when needed.
Hi Chippy. I meant to ask before if the Archos 9 could handle an MJPEG stream off the internet?
I’d be interested what they can see of the streams reachable from this page: http://www.y-cam.com/cms/gallery.php
If they can’t quite manage there are some variations of the actual camera addresses that avoid the login, etc.
I was surprised earlier in the year when it turned out that the earlier Archos devices could not, and were basically a portable dvd player without the dvd. ie. Copy video from PC to device, watch on device. Seemed very narrow functionality to me. They were kind of a big video iPod.
Review or Live Session will be great, like that device and will buy one. What HD is in there? 1,8 inch? Will change it into a fast SSD cause HD makes no sense.
$499 = €340 and £300 (at today’s rates)
Yet we get and dollar to Pound/Euro exchange
€499 – £499 respectively
Is there something wrong with that picture?
Question is have anybody tried average hd streaming or even itunes downloaded videos playback….?
Then this could be it :-)
I really am tempted and as it’s win7 we should have no issues, as with all other Archos products, of visiting sites that use Flash.
And I’m with scrootch, if this thing can stream HD from my home network and play HD vids online then it’s a winner.
Does anyone know if it will be available in the US tomorrow?
How will you test television on the US variation?
Nearly all US television is now HD so it must be able to display HD I would think.
In Europe we have to pay around 20% VAT tax, so 340€ about 60€ 399€ should be the European price. They probably keep some margins for the resellers. Usually, if they ship a lot of products to a lot of people, you’ll find it 20% below MSRP at the cheapest online German resellers, so around 400€ is going to be possible.
Posted from my Archos 5 Internet Tablet with Android.
I rather doubt it. I couldn`t find any shop that lists the archos 9. Not even amazon has it for preorder yet. So it will probably still be a few weeks till it really arrives.
Archos site has it now at £450 or 499 Euros.
Play.com is listing it at £399 delivered.
Play.com lists the EURO price at “EUR 519.99 Free Delivery, Pre-order. | Due for release on 04/11/2009”. In £ you get £50,- discount.
I think inking was an issue on test models. With Windows 7 and maybe the ‘super’ versions of the Archos 9, do you think inking will be better?
C.
No Ubuntu version.
Archos, you have just lost a possible sale by using Windows 7. Whether I may or may not be in the minority is a different discussion.
Archos 5 Android has Linux, but it’s not a full desktop OS, and it has a resistive touch screen, and no 3G.
Does this have a wider screen than the Asus T91?

I’ve bit the bullet and ordered one. Hopefully it will arrive early next week. I sure will try to get Linux on it and so how well it runs. Although there is little hope (yet) for the GMA500 video.
Excuse me if i am seem a tad mean, irrelevant or plain and simply wrong.
But why do we in europe have to pay 499 euros or 450 GBP. While the US pays $499 for the Archos 9 PC tablet
This US$499 is equal to around 330 euros or 310 GBP approximately.
Have i missed something or are we (europeans) a gullible bunch.
I am greatly disappointed with Archos. Considering my Archos devices include a Gmini 400, an AV500, then a PMA 400, a 404 to the 605. i have always loved the guile of the company. Always willing to take a chance on the unconventional device. I feel Archos has rewarded there loyal european customer base with a “kick in the teeth’.
And i for one will not be buying the Archos 9 on the strength of this p… take. (Sorry to offend)
This pricing/marketing strategy, has left me disappointed and awaiting another fairly priced, out of the ordinary device.
After reading this to my wife, who knows me to be an avid archos supporter, She called me a “Geek and a Moany old man”. Is this what happens to geeks, when we age… Lol
Anyone able to find this? Would like to purchase asap. Should hold me down for a couple months lol.
If you are in Europe, then Archos.com seems to be the only palce with stock at the moment….

the win7 is only the starter version.
I’m pretty excited as to when this thing will be coming out to Canada. My HP is just about ready to die on even though it’s condition is perfect still, I just can’t put up with it’s continuous overheating so I’m ready to throw this one out the window in replacement for something new. The Archos 9 PC Tablet got my interest.
