Motorola Droid brings another interesting Android device onto the radar

droid It is just me or does it seem like Android is the hot thing right now? Motorola and Verizon have been teasing the internet for the last few days about their upcoming Droid phone which is powered by Android (of course). Well the joke is on them as the Droid page seemed to have accidentally popped up ahead of schedule and the folks over at the Boy Genius snagged screenshots of the pages before they had a chance to take it down. Check the Droid’s specs:

  • Slider with physical keyboard
  • Runs Android
  • 3.7 inch, 16:9, 480 x 854 touchscreen
  • 5MP camera with 4x zoom, autofocus, and dual LED flash
  • 550MHz CPU
  • Included 16GB Micro-SD card
  • GPS
  • Bluetooth and WiFi

There aren’t too many other details at this point, but with a faster CPU than most Android phones to date, and a 16:9 screen, the Droid is shaping up to be a nice MIDPhone. Engadget also has a video from the site showing the Droid in a 360 view, head over to check it out.

I really need someone to compare the 550mhz Cortex-A8 processor to the 528mhz ARM11 one we all grew to hate….

    How faster is it? 10%? 50%? 300%?

  3. passby says:

actual speed of cotex is 1.5 times faster than that of arm 11.

    cotex 500Mhz equals 750Mhz ARM 11. That’s the claim of ARM. :)

  4. TareX says:

    Thanks :)
I gotta say though I felt the difference would be more palpable than a 1.5 fold…

  5. Carl says:

In terms of normal integer maths that is correct, but the Cortex has a NEON vector processing unit that offers a huge speed boost if someone writes code that uses it.

  6. Patrick says:

Junk CPU. The Qualcomm MSM7200 series is too long on the market, but alas it should be affordable messenger phone.

    Interesting report on ARM C-A5:

  8. Cell phone reviews says:

There will be many phones with the Android OS and the Droid will have way more Apps in it’s 1st year then the IPhone had in it’s first year. The Android OS will cruise past Apple in the # of apps for this phone compared to the IPhone.

  9. Ben says:

Saying that the Droid will have more apps in its first year than the iPhone is a pretty easy claim to make considering that the App Store didn’t exist in its first year, and neither did any other app stores.

  10. Bagam says:

what does # of apps matter? its the quality that matters. why is it always american-centric companies & consumers rating their self worth on who has the highest number? i really wish they would follow the Japanese mindset & focus on quality.

I was gonna get the Samsung Omnia II, but now the Motorola Droid.. Ah.. I’m melting to have this phone. I wish they would hurry up and interview it though… Does anyone know if it can taxt all 3 ways? i.e, full physical qwerty keyboard, full touch qwerty keyboard in landscape mode, and I already know about the regular touch-txt as if it were a normal phone. I asked this question on http://www.Motorola-Droid.org feel free to share your views.
