Posted on 19 January 2010

I had the pleasure of spending about an hour with Bob where he demonstrated the Mobinnova Beam, highlighted an excelent Morgan Stanley mobile internet report and chit-chatted about some of the announcements, successes and challenges that remain for ARM and it’s partners. He also took 5 minutes to record an audio interview.

Warning: Proven Security Issue on MiFi 3G routers. (Updated with Novatel response)

Posted on 18 January 2010

I’ve been extremely happy with the Mifi 2352 (and the Sprint version I used at CES) We voted it mobile gadget of the year and have previously highlighted it for ease of use and its ability to improve security over open hotspots. Unfortunately we’re going to have to retract the latter statement because of a serious security issue based around multiple vulnerabilities. The latest update highlights the ultimate danger. http://evilpacket.net/2010/jan/14/mifi-geopwn/ 1-16-2010: @aramosf posted to twitter that the MiFi’s config can be directly accessed without authentication. If you combine his attack […]

Checking in on the Joojoo/CrunchPad

Posted on 18 January 2010

Despite the interest that the Joojoo [Portal page] (formerly CrunchPad) had generated early on, it seems as though all of the legal troubles have taken over where excitement for the device once was. Consider this a summary post to get us back on track with the device itself rather than the debacle surrounding it’s development. That being said… to talk about the Joojoo without first understanding it’s background would be a challenge. We’ll try to briefly catch you up to speed: The Joojoo began as the brainchild of Michael Arrington […]

N900 and iPhone 3GS camera comparison shots

Posted on 18 January 2010

One of the coolest features on the Nokia N900 is the pretty awesome camera. The N900 has an auto-focus 5.0MP camera with a dual-LED flash (with a sliding cover). The optics are by Carl Zeiss which are regarded as being high quality in the world of cameras. I’ve got several shots taken by the iPhone 3GS’s 3.0MP auto-focus camera and put them up against images taken with the N900. You’ll see the iPhone’s photos on the left and the N900 shots on the right. Be sure to click on the […]

Watch Out for Smart Device Battery Life Claims.

Posted on 16 January 2010

Marketing around ‘Smart Devices’ has taken off and as I wandered around CES last week it was evident that there’s a bit of land-grab going on. Battery life claims are getting out of hand in my opinion so I took the time to write a little ‘warning’ article this morning. You can find it at UMPCPortal. A Warning about ‘Smart’ Device Battery Life.

Posted on 15 January 2010

As we move to active and connected standby scenarios and and extremely wide power ‘envelope’ for connected devices there will be problems in determining the true, real-world battery life of a connected device. This article addresses the issue.
