We, along with nearly everyone else, previously presumed that the iPhone 4 [Portal page (updated)] would feature 256MB of RAM. However, to the delight of some 600,000 pre-order customers, which Apple reportedly acquired on the 15th, the iPhone 4 will come with 512MB of RAM, double that of the previous iPhone 3GS and the iPad. The news comes from a WWDC session and was reported by MacRumors. The prior assumption was based on one bit of evidence, and one inference. The evidence was a leaked photo of an iPhone 4 […]

One of the promises of the iPad [Portal page] is that its large capacitive touch surface would be great for having multiple people interact with content on the screen. It’s taken a little while, but I’ve finally found some games for the iPad that are, not only fun, but great for more than one player on a single iPad, and I’ve had a blast playing them with friends and family — some of which are gamers, casual gamers, or not even gamers at all — yet all of them have […]

I know there are a lot of designers, manufacturers and resellers that read UMPCPortal so this one is for you. Potential Windows 7 Slate customers should also read this. In fact, as a reviewer, I’m learning from this White Paper too! Windows 7 Engineering Guidance for Slate PCs. Windows for Devices have reproduced an extremely useful white paper by Microsoft that gives detailed information about what Windows 7 can bring to slate PCs (note Microsoft aren’t using the ‘Tablet PC’ term!) and how designers should think about everything from ergonomics […]

The XPPhone story has been quite a long one and many of us wondered whether the device would reach the market but it has, and we took a look at it at Computex. The mechanics were very solid, the operation very easy and the keyboard quite good. The phone functions work and even the battery life appears to be acceptable. This is definitely a specialist device but if you’re prepared to carry it around with you it’s going to reward you with a relatively fast, and totally complete Internet experience, […]

Today was pre-order day for the iPhone 4 [Portal page] and things went far from smooth. Both Apple and AT&T’s pre-order processes were taken to their knees by the hoard of people attempting to pre-order the iPhone 4. If you were trying to place an iPhone pre-order, you’d be lucky if you actually managed to make that happen. Apparently, we we’re one of the lucky ones, and we managed to get a pre-order through to the Apple store earlier today. According to Apple, the iPhone 4 will be here on […]

Joanna Stern of Engadget has a thorough preview of the upcoming Motorola Droid X, and man… does that thing look huge! As we see smartphones and MIDs continue to become one in the same, smartphones are getting ever larger; good news for the rather large Dell Streak [Portal page]. The Motorola Droid X has a 4.4 inch screen with an 854×480 resolution, which is nearly an inch larger than the iPhone 4’s 3.5 inch screen [Portal page]. Here’s a list of unofficial specs for the Droid X: Android 2.1 with […]

I wanted to live with the Acer 1825 PT for a couple of weeks before I posted a review because using it for a couple of days isn’t a good test of any device. Its been a great work horse but not without its faults. If you haven’t already, check out my unboxing video. Hardware Overall the look of and feel of the Acer is good, its very compact and not too heavy, although at 1.72 kg (3.79 lbs) it does begin to feel weighty when using it one handed. […]
