At Computex, Microsoft announced Windows Embedded Compact 7, the latest version of their Windows CE operating system. While Windows CE was generally used for less consumer friendly things in the past (ATMs, cars, automation systems, etcetera) it looks like Microsoft is trying to grab a little piece of the mobile operating system market which is currently being dominated by Android. Windows Embedded Compact 7 (that’s a mouthful, let’s just call it WEC7) is not an out-of-the-box OS like Android. Instead, it’s more of a foundation for an OS that allows […]

Digging around on Viliv’s site, you can find the Viliv X10 Windows spec sheet which shows a different design than the one that we saw at Computex. This rendering is actually looking quite nice, but we won’t necessarily see this design. Viliv says that, while the X10 (Android) slate will be shipped by them, this X10 (Windows) slate is a design that may or may not be sold to other manufacturers that will apply their own branding. Interestingly, Viliv’s specs sheet mentions that the screen is capacitive with “pen input […]

Here’s one for Chippy, the much anticipated Google Maps Navigation yesterday went live in 11 more countries. The UK and USA have been using the free turn by turn navigation service on Android for a while now and so far has proven very popular among its users. Google Maps Navigation is an Internet-connected GPS navigation system that provides turn-by-turn voice guidance as a free feature of Google Maps. It uses the devices inbuilt GPS and also the data connection to download maps before your journey starts, this means if you […]

I liked the ‘landscape Blackberry’ format of this little messenger I saw at the ARM showcase in Taiwan last week. It’s running Maemo on a Marvell 300-series platform (ARMv5 in the same league as the Nokia N810 in terms of processing power) The screen was a little small for my eyes but I think there’s potential for using this purely for mobile social networking where you need a wide range of services, 3G, GPS and a quality browser to support all the links that get passed about. You’d certainly save […]

Here are the video recordings for the Dell Streak live session I did this evening. Thanks to the people in the chat room who asked questions, answered questions and corrected my errors! We had over 300 people drop in for the session. Note that Ustream playback features often get overloaded in the U.S. afternoon/evening so be patient! Session 1, 17 mins, includes an overview of the device, specifications and some initial impressions. Session 2, 50 minutes, includes an overview of the keyboard, browsing, video, music and camera. More information on […]

At an Intel Ultra Mobility event at Computex last week we got a demo, a very impressive demo, of the Moorestown smartphone platform performing some video, gaming and 3D tricks. It’s the multitasking demo at the end of the video (below) that shows the potential. We’re not expecting stellar smartphone battery life on phones using the Intel Moorestown platform but what we saw makes us wonder if it’s worth just carrying this for just gaming and video duties. Impressive. Note the Android-based NDrive application running too. It’s not only MeeGo […]
