MSI showed us the WindPad 100 back at Computex and early hands on weren’t great but MSI have had plenty time to resolve those prototype niggles and have distributed press images of the production model with its dock.
The WindPad 100 comes sporting an Intel Atom Z530 CPU running at 1.66GHz, 2GB RAM, 32GB SSD, WiFi, HDMI and 2 USB ports on board with the dock adding additional connectors in the form of 2 USB ports, audio jacks, LAN, VGA, HDMI and the usual DC socket for charging.
Its a sleek design and with the dock may make a compelling package for anyone wanting the full desktop operating system experience of Windows 7. MSI will also package their own ‘Wind Touch’ overlay to help you work the 10.1 inch, multi touch capacitive display. An optional 3G model has been speculated and last we heard the device itself would set you back $499 USD.
There are still a lot of questions about Window 7’s ability at being touch friendly and many have already discounted it as a viable tablet operating system, however with the right optimisations Microsoft and MSI could pull off a tablet which appeals to the masses.
We expect to see more at IFA in Berlin next month.

Spec looks good, but the main question is battery life and SSD performance…
Cheap old tech USB thumb drive like SSD are really bad…
As for battery… 3-4hrs+ is a must…

Windows 7 is an excellent Tablet operating System, provided the device is a Pen based Tablet. Any Wacon penabled Tablet is a joy to use with Windows 7.
The problem with this tablet along with every other windows 7 Tablet in this post ipad era is that they are making the devices touch only.
The Ipad was designed for Touch not for pen
Windows 7 was desigened primarily for Pen with some touch thrown in.
It should be a no brainer why these Touch Only Windows 7 tablets are destined to flop.
Include Pen/digitizer support and I’m sold.
btw I have an iPad and it mostly just collects dust. My (beloved) EVO is far more useful and portable. And Adding Swype to Android makes it far easier & quicker for typing.
As soon as a feasible Win or Android tablet arrives, the Pad going on Ebay. (or to my kid sister).

Damn.. yet another Capacitive slate, I wish we’d see more hybrids, or palm rejection equipped resistive slates for Windows.
I ask all the ppl who has been complaining that Windows 7 isn’t a touch friendly OS to ask themselves if they’re complaining about the OS or the APPS they’re using are not touch friendly.
I’ve been using Tablet PCs since the first Acer and now using a UH900, I can honestly say that with Windows 7 it is the first OS where I genuinely feel secure enough to use WITHOUT a keyboard, but of course there hasn’t been a proper Win 7 slate released yet. Trying to find the recent Asus Tablet PC which I’ve tested to have a pretty good palm rejection screen, great for writing!
These are the optimizations I use for my touch systems.

I would be amazing to see a dual digitiser stuck in this slate but I cannot see if happening, mostly because of the cost.
In the case of the MSI WindPad, usability of the Wind Touch interface will determine if it will be a keeper or not, time will tell.
I agree with everything you’ve commented on above. If the issue for some is the usability of a finger for touching certain links on windows, why not change the UI? There are manner software UI options out there that can be installed on top of Windows. Thinix Touch comes to mind, but I know there are other options, as well. My only regret is that there are none that include Wacom pen compatibility. ExoPC is supposed to come wiht a Wacom stylus, and Hanvon is supposed to be coming out wiht an additional touchpad that works for both multi-touch and wacom. There is also the Haleron iLet 10″ Extreme tablet. And, maybe, the Asus 12″ tablet. Personally, I will wait for one of them to come out. The capacitive pens leave a lot to be desired.
I agree with the capacitive stylus sucks remark, what most people dont realize is that you can write decent diagrams with capacitive styluses.
Personally I prefer the 10″ form factor, and am trying to find the Asus T101MT which I’ve tested and found the palm rejection to be pretty good.
The Hanvon *sounds* good on paper sporting a hybrid digitizer, but the fact that it’s an uncommon brand would mean that it’s going to be hard to get hold of.
The Hanvon is supposed to come to the US in the next month or so. We’ll see. The model with both is a good six months off.
Chippy on the product page you saying “No Wireless PAN (Bluetooth)” does it mean it has no Bluetooth at all or just 2.0?
Thanks!
Thanks for the heads-up. It was defaulting to ‘no Wireless PAN’ I’ve updated it to show that we don’t currently have the information.
