Despite the incomplete nature of these ‘smart’ books I’ve been testing, I’m still positive that the form factor and ARM-based processor has a lot to offer and that it will greatly influence the netbook of the future. People will say that the smart ‘book’ is dead but I guarantee that if Apple were to release a MacBook iAir running on iOS, the worlds axis would change and it would become the next best thing. Smart ‘books’ aren’t dead, they’re just gestating. I’ll be continuing to test various devices with various […]

Continued from Twitter for @alsutton @beantin @mkearley2008 and others that were maybe a little surprised at my tweet this morning… “My current stance on iPad alternatives – There are none. inch I couldn’t answer the twitter responses in 140 chars so here’s a more detailed, and I hope, understandable explanation. Consumer Internet device success continues to hinge on applications. It’s the reason that AppUp exists, that Nokia will invest 10m into developer incentives in the US, why Samsung is throwing money to Bada developers and why Chrome OS will have […]

I was fortunate enough to bump into Stephan Odoerfer of 4TiiToo on my way to San Francisco last week. 4TiiToo are one of the two companies that are responsible for the WeTab and being with Stephan on a 10hr flight gave me a good chance to test the device out, albeit without Internet. The WeTab is the first MeeGo-based product to hit the market and although it’s not quite what you’d expect if you’ve tested out MeeGo betas on your netbook, it does show what’s possible with the core system […]

If you’ve been following tech websites recently, you will have heard a lot about application stores and applications over the last year. Apple did it and everyone followed. Developers have made money and customers have enjoyed a huge range of software solutions. A year ago, Intel announced that they too were getting into the app-store game. With 30 million netbooks out there and a clear strategy to push into TV, smartphones and cars, it wasn’t a bad idea at all. Last week Intel took us to San Francisco to get […]

I don’t usually cover standard smartphones on Carrypad but seeing as Nokia were kind enough to spend 2 hours demonstrating the N8 to me in Düsseldorf last month, I’ll be kind enough to comment on it and provide you readers with some thoughts. [Photos, video and brief N82 photo comparison below.] As someone who’s heavily into mobile and connected photography, (N82, X10i owner) the N8 interests me. As someone who’s also into a full, fast internet experiences, the N8 doesn’t interest me. ‘Step away from ARM11’ is my advice for […]

We’ve had talks with Linpus about MeeGo before but in a discussion at IDF last week we got down to some more details about the MeeGo Slate Edition and it sounds like we’ve got potential here. Remember, Linpus have supplied Acer with Linux builds in the past. What we know right now is that Linpus already have a MeeGo build and it’s highly likely that they will be supplying that to one of the major netbook manufacturers however their plans for Slate Edition are firm for a Q4 release and […]

While we’ve heard about Oaktrail and Moorestown, we haven’t exactly seen a lot of complete products that allow us to test the next-gen Atom CPU architecture. Word from Intel is that we’re looking at 50x less idle power, 20x lower thermal envelope (a statement that is difficult to quantify) and in certain scenarios, 50% or more power reduction. MP3 playback and video playback, for example, should take a lot less power. One way to asses the platforms before they hit the market as products is to look at the Tunnel […]
