In about an hour I’ll be starting the live blog from Intel’s developer forum here in San Francisco. You may have read new from the keynote yesterday but today’s keynotes are the more important ones for those looking at the Atom ecosystem of mobile-focused computing. We’ll see Rene James announcing a number of important progressions in the MeeGo, AppUp and Appup Developer Program (formerly Atom Developer Program) and all indicators point to big news. We expect AppUp to be announced as final (‘Gold’, out of beta) and we expect to […]

My current laptop is a netbook. I’ve been using it as my portable computer for well over a year and I’m very happy with it. I’m using XP, it’s got a 2GB RAM upgrade and a fast SSD and a great built-in 3G module. The only issue with it is that any other netbook out there is a downgrade for me because switching to Windows 7 on a standard netbook is noticeably slower. That all changed today when I took on the Acer D255 as a loaner for the Intel […]

I’m flying to San Francisco tomorrow and so you’re unlikely to hear much from me until Intel’s IDF starts on Monday so before then I thought I’d promote a couple of reports and offer them to you as an e-pub so you can read them at your leisure over the weekend. Of course, you can read them online here too. The two articles are tablet related: Making a HIT. (Your Checklist for a Quality Handheld Internet Tablet) Things to Consider when Designing or Buying a Tablet-Style Device The epub file […]

You really wonder why Novatel haven’t done this themselves because the biggest compaint about the MiFi is that the battery runs out too quickly. It’s possibly a good sign to Novatel that people are using the Mifi a lot but still, it can’t be that difficult to release a re-design. Mugen Power have beaten them to it though and although this looks ugly and costs a lot, it’s still an amazingly compact 8hr 3G solution. Certainly better than mine! His name is Uli Dumschat and he’s a marketing engineer for Intel Atom products for Intel in Europe. He was just one of a number of presentations we saw at Intel’s Atom developer day in Berlin (Germans, head over to IT-Techblog for a rundown of the day) and after this video he simply got up, turned on the projector and delivered a great presentation about software development tools for Intel Atom. Talent! We’ll be spending a week at IDF next week so you’ll hear more than enough from me about […]

Just one week before Intel’s IDF will detail more about their mobile CPU roadmap for 2011/2012, ARM have announced some details about their own 2012 high power mobile silicon. Cortex A15 (Codename: Eagle)

I’ve just updated the Carrypad device database overview page to make it a million times more useful. Gone is the matrix of images and in-comes a new, interactive, sortable, filterable list of all the devices in the Carrypad database. We have tablets, superphones, Internet media players, smart-books and of course, tablets. (In general, 4-10 inch devices targeted at the consumer) We have left out the PMPs (tip:head over to our partner, Pocketables.net for all the PMPs) and the netbooks (Tip: Head over to our partner Liliputing.com for all the netbooks.)
