Samsung Galaxy Tab $499 without 3G (In U.S.)

Pocketables have some interesting news about the Wi-Fi-only version of the Galaxy Tab. We’re seeing a continuing slide on the prices in Europe with the UK leading on 529 pounds (592 Euros) and others, like Germany, not far behind.  The pre-tax price is 451 pounds, $709 which is a healthy chunk of money. The U.S. can expect cheaper prices than that but how about this: $499 for a Wifi-Only version at Best Buy, matching exactly the 16GB Wifi-only version of the iPad.

The two devices don’t stack up as complete equals with the Galaxy Tab leaning towards more mobility and flexibility where the iPad has the app store and beautiful UI on its side but both are up there as excellent choices.

Does the lack of 3G take away some of the mobility advantage though? Should smaller mean cheaper? What do you think?

More information on U.S. pricing over at Pocketables:

Samsung Galaxy Tab headed to Best Buy: $499 and up, Sprint, Verizon, silver/black, WiFi-only, WiFi + 3G.

Shouldn’t the title say without 3G?

  2. MarcG says:

I’d be happy to pay less and lose 3G. I’ve got a number of ways to keep a wifi device connected on the road.

Of course the base iPad price is £429 in the UK, a lot more than $499. Call it £350 and you have a del!

I know there are lots of ‘us’ who visit sites like this who will be happy to have a smaller device and realise that often smaller costs more, but I think the general public will see smaller should be cheaper…

so adding a 3G radio bumps the price by nearly $300?

    Makes me wonder why…

    Doh! Incorrect title!

    I thank it to expansive.
android 2.2 is not design for tablet PC.

  6. turn.self.off says:

given that, i would say that it is doing remarkably well on the tab.

  7. Nernac says:

i thought Google was going to drop the 3G requirement for marketplace in Gingerbread, so how is Samsung getting away with it in Froyo?

  8. turn.self.off says:

google dropped that back in 2.0/2.1, but they still maintain a list of other requirements (camera, accelerometer, compass, gps).

  9. jb82 says:

Pointless without 3g …. starts creeping into archos territory at $275.

  10. Aaron says:

Yes it does compete even more directly with the Archos 70, which is a comparison it can’t win at that price.

But, it is far from pointless without 3G. Do you have a phone? Good Data plans start are $25-$30, which is cheaper than what you would pay on contract for the Galaxy Tab 3G. You could even get one of those Android phones with mobile hotspot, so that you don’t even lose a little bit of the speed, and you still pay less.

  11. jb82 says:

    or the elocity at $370

    I agree with Aaron.

I have an HTC EVO and given its hot spot capability, a tab with 3G is not needed. A tab with WiFi yes, love the idea, with 3G, not needed for me.

In short 3G would be useless for me.

Also the data plans for the galaxy tab are not that great for someone like myself (call me the data junkie). I already have unlimited data with my EVO, tethering from that is good enough.

Anywhere I would need to be able to connect my tab to the web, my EVO will be there to tether the connection for me.
