Report: Timeline for MeeGo Netbooks, Tablets and Smartphones

Posted on 20 November 2010

Just a few days after the first ever MeeGo conference I have the best chance ever to take what I’ve seen, heard and learnt to try and predict when and what will happen with MeeGo in 2011. When will versions ship? On what hardware? When will the applications store ship and finally, when will end-products ship both via Intel and Nokia funding and, importantly, through independent vendors. First let’s remember that MeeGo is an offering to developers, OEMs, manufacturers and other non-end-user customers. Like Android open-source, it will comprise a […]

Samsung Continuum (w/ secondary “ticker” display) Unboxing

Posted on 19 November 2010

We’ve got our hands on a very unique Android device. Check out our unboxing of the Samsung Galaxy S Continuum [tracking page], which features a secondary AMOLED display which measures 1.8” and has a resolution of 480×96. To activate the display, you squeeze both parts of the bottom part of the phone. The display has definite potential, but will it be able to prove it’s use to escape the ‘gimmick’ tag? Stay tuned for our upcoming full review to find out. If there’s anything in particular you’d like to know […]

Dell Inspiron Duo to Launch Soon for €549 (Europe)

Posted on 18 November 2010

Update: Ben has already posted some U.S.-related news along with some interesting thoughts on the design. Check out his post here. Information coming though from a couple of German blogs over the last hour indicate that the Duo is going to launch for 549 Euro with the N550 CPU, 2GB RAM and a Broadcom video accelerator. Over at NDevil we get hands-on from a press conference. Comparison with the Samsung N350 shows that it’s much bigger and thicker. There’s a video too:   NewGadgetsDe also this one is in German […]

MeeGo Conference Day 2 – Touch and Mobile Dominate

Posted on 17 November 2010

Day 2 of the MeeGo included close to 60 sessions for the 1000 people at Aviva stadium in Dublin this week so there was no shortage of information available. As someone who’s trying to work out ‘when’ and trying to analyse ‘where’ MeeGo really fits among the mobile and desktop operating systems though it was hard to get any solid statements out of the presentations. It’s up to me, you and everyone else in the industry to take in as much information as possible and to try and work it […]

The Ever Interesting Dell Duo Could Launch Next Week, Will the Slate Mode be Useful?

Posted on 16 November 2010

According to Brooke Crothers from Cnet who cites “industry sources familiar with the launch plans inch, the Dell Duo [tracking page] could launch on November 23rd. I’m torn between loving and hating the Dell Duo. For one, I think they have a very interesting take on the convertible form-factor. It’s novel and will definitely get the attention it’s looking for from consumers. I can see people looking at it next to a typical (boring) netbook and opting for the Duo because of its neat design (given that they are similarly […]

MeeGo Handset User Experience Progresses

Posted on 16 November 2010

We were lucky enough to get a few days with the Aava / Intel / Meego phone earlier this year and our tests with the handset UX showed that there was a lot of work to do. In a presentation at the MeeGo onference in Dublin today, we saw progress, a good working demo and future planning but still, there’s so much missing. Granted, these user-experiences are just baseline builds to show how the core features can be used but still, it seems to us there are some hooks that […]

BlackBerry Playbook Goes up Against the iPad on Video

Posted on 16 November 2010

RIM has posted an official video on their BlackBerry YouTube channel and does a brief web browsing comparison with the PlayBook [tracking page] and iPad [tracking page] side-by-side. It’s good to see the PlayBook in the flesh rather than as a pre-rendered animation as it’s been seen up until now. […]
