Building concept devices for CES is nothing new and in a way, is one of the easier, cheaper methods of getting some good marketing buzz going at a major consumer electronics show. You create a roughly working concept device, make it look smart, talk about some out-of-this world scenarios, create some nice videos, put the device behind plexiglass and ignore the fact that it will have serious issues in getting to market. No need to talk about pricing, support, launch date and other awkward themes! I feel the Razer Switchblade […]

If there’s one thing that gets me going it’s a mobile device with great audio features. I love music discovery, mobility and quality. The fewer wires, the better. The Creative ZiiO 7 and 10 inch devices have just such a feature and having tested it at CES I can say that I’m now a fan of APT-X and I want to integrate an Android tablet into my lounge Hi-Fi as soon as possible. I’m not sure the Creative ZiiO tablets are the hardware I’d use though. APT-X is a brand […]

Jen-Hsun Huang, the CEO of Nvidia has recently announced a major Tegra 2 win (Honeycomb) and a new project “extending the performance range of the ARM instruction-set architecture, enabling the ARM architecture to cover a larger portion of the computing space inch so it’s no surprise that the CEO is positive when he talks about ARM. I had the chance to watch him being interviewed by All Things D mobile correspondent Ina Fried last week at CES and with Galaxy Tab in hand I was put to the test in […]

Despite having a presence at CES, my favorite deal-a-day site, Woot.com didn’t manage to snag any of those fancy new tables that were put on display. They did however, managed to secure a stock of Augen Gentouch78 slate android devices that will let you jump into the Android game rather cheaply, but also fit snuggly into the “you get what you pay for categoryâ€.

This is not the first time we’ve discussed the crossover between pro/productive/full-os mobility and the continuing threat/opportunities offered by mobile operating systems. See: Mobile Changover What’s Your Plan? for more from June 2010. CES 2011 was an absolute whirlwind of crossover products and after a week of note-taking, I’ve put together a report. Following the crossover theme, I’ve published it over at Carrypad! Report: Mobile Computing at CES 2011 The X-Over Year Don’t forget, Meet:Mobility Podcast 62 covers a lot of this ground too and includes perspectives from JKKMobile and […]

We’ve just recorded Meet:Mobility Podcast 62. If you haven’t tuned in, please do because JKK, Sascha and myself spend a long time talking in detail about what happened in mobile computing at CES and give you a good overview of the significant products we got to understand while were in Las Vegas. For me, the show brought me the biggest signal yet that the X-over is happening. That’s X86 and ARM platforms crossing over in the mobile and personal computing space. We’ve seen many indicators before now that ARM-derived processing […]

Chippy briefly wrote about the Atrix from the show floor, but it’s presence on our site was otherwise lost in the avalanche of news happening during those days. Now that the dust has settled, I can safely say that the Atrix represents something that I’m very excited about. Chippy called it “phone as a CPU†and I think that’s a great analogy for it.
