The Engadget team got some quality time with a working Notion Ink tablet this morning and their report sreavels some good details about the performance, buid, screen and software. One of the key features is the PixelQi screen which Engadget report to have good viewing angles, great sunlight reading characteristics but a slightly washed-out color mode. The build and weight is reported to be good for reading although at 1.5lbs (680gm) I’d argue that it’s still too heavy for long-term use. You need to be in under the 500gm mark […]

We had a good chat with Lenovo U.S. at a CES event last night and it seems they’re quite serious about launching a 10 inch dual-mode tablet (capacitive/digitiser) later this year. Specifications aren’t finalised yet but think about a competitor to the HP Slate 500. The device will run on Oaktrail (1.5 or 1.6Ghz, the device we saw was running 1.5Ghz) and will run Windows 7 plus some UI layer that Lenovo are working on, possibly with Microsoft. It has a docking port, 2GB of RAM, a minimum 32GB SSD […]

Google have just released a video demonstrating Android 3.0 on the Android Developers Youtube page however it appears to have been accidental as the video has just been pulled. Fortunately Engadget managed to get another copy of the video and It shows a version of Android that is like nothing we have seen before. It’s been rumoured for sometime that Honeycomb is a special version of Android dedicated for the tablet form factor and the video confirms this declaring Android 3.0 is “Built Entirely for Tablet inch. The video shows […]

The rumour had been going around but it’s now confirmed that Samsung have a 10 inch convertible tablet/netbook on Oaktrail ready to go in March. We missed the press event at CES this morning to write up some other articles so we’re picking this up from other sources but according to Engadget, it’s an Oaktrail-based device (1.66GHz Z670) with 32 or 64GB SSD, 2GB of RAM and a high-brightness 1366×768 capacitive screen. There’s no mention of a digitiser in the press release. As for battery life… The six-cell lithium-polymer battery […]

Intel have scored a hit for their AppUp store. If you’ve got a netbook you can download it via the AppUp store. I’ve tested it and it’s working really nicely. I’ll be doing more ‘testing’ as soon as I can! This is the sort of application that will start to attract attention for AppUp and while I suspect it was an Intel-supported port by Rovio, it won’t take too many of these before AppUp becomes a well-known and self-seeding product. The stats from this will be very interesting indeed. I’m […]

Motorola Atrix 4G Laptop Dock Originally uploaded by nvidia.corporation Look at that picture! A lot of us have been talking about this sort of docking for years but we’re not getting to the point in time where the mobile phone is becoming the central processing unit. The CPU! The nvidia press conference is happening now. I’m not there but expect a good bunch of videos to be coming out soon from JKKmobile, Netbooknews, Engadget, Laptopmag, Slashgear and the rest of the bloggers that I know are in the conference. More […]

Although Intels ‘Core’ products rarely reach down into our mobility segment here on UMPCPortal, I attended the launch of the second-gen Core CPUs at CES today to get some idea of what technologies could be coming down the road and how it might affect the positioning for Atom-based products. Before the main announcements this morning though, Paul Otellini took a few minutes to talk about other products in the Intel portfolio. Two of those apply here. Firstly, 100 new atom-based netbooks and tablets will launch in the first half of […]

Viliv has lifted the embargo on some press renders of their upcoming Android tablets, the X7 and X10. We’ve seen quality built products from Viliv in the past so we’re quite excited to get out hands on the their first attempts at the Android slate space. This isn’t Viliv’s first foray with Android however; they’ve previously shown the P3 Prime, but it was primarily built as an MP3 device, and never saw an international release. Chippy’s on the show floor at CES 2011 this year so expect to see some […]
