With most manufacturers releasing Android tablets for the consumer market, Panasonic has chosen to go the opposite direction by announcing plans to deliver an enterprise-grade Android tablet. Panasonic describes its Toughbook as being designed with enterprise strength hardware security, real life durability, reliability, and marketed to “appeal to a wide variety of users, including mission critical government personnel, highly mobile field forces, SMB’s looking for a competitive edge, security conscious IT managers, and bottom-line focused CFOs”. There isn’t’ a lot of information on the version of Android operating system nor […]

Samsung make, in my experience, some of the most efficient netbooks and laptops in the market. Over the last 5 years I’ve repeatedly seen idle / background drain figures that are better than anything else which is why I’m looking forward to testing the Samsung TX100 when it launches. Based on Intel’s Oaktrail it should be capable of some extremely low power drain and as a travel PC for use with solar or other alternative energy sources, nicely positioned. There’s another Samsung netbook out there though that has taken the […]

You don’t have to buy a Chromebook to get Chrome OS. Using the Hexxeh open source Chrome OS builds, Lars F. Jørgensen built a Chromebook out of an early netbook, the Aspire One A110. With netbooks in Europe dipping under 200 Euros occasionally now (here’s an offer for a current Acer D255 at Amazon, Germany my Affiliate link) it doesn’t have to be old or expensive either. I’ve posted the article over at Chromebook News as I feel there’s limited ultra-mobile capability in it but it’s interesting to think of […]

While not officially an ultrabook, the beautiful Samsung Series 9 uses exactly the same platform as the Asus UX21 will when it launches. It comes with a generous 128GB SSD and it’s super-light too. The only issue is that it’s expensive. That’s not going to deter us from testing one though so next week we’ll have the Samsung 900X3A with Core i5-2537M (NP-900X3A-A01DE) and we’ll be doing a live review session in partnership with my other blogging location, UMPCPortal.com Stay tuned here and on Twitter for more information. We’ve put […]

Thanks to (Deutsche) Telekom in Germany we had a nice hands-on with the first LTE service here in Koeln (Cologne.) At 80 euro per month this is clearly a premium service but if you can justify it in and around Koeln, its a super high speed service. We measured 45Mbps this evening! This is obviously the first phase; more devices and tariff options will feed in and it goes hand-in-hand with rollouts from other service providers and in other European countries which we’ll be happy to test and happy to […]

Let’s say you need a UMPC. It’s not as uncommon as some people think. It might not be the consumers cup of tea but in industry, mobility counts for a lot. Logistics, amateur pilots, health industry, blue-light industry, traveling geeks and other situations where full capability, compatibility and flexibility in the smallest package is key. The problem is, if you need a ultra mobile PC today, what the hell are you going to buy? Lets put down a little wish-list for the sake of the argument. Sub-1KG, Windows 7 support, […]
