In Part 4 we looked at a €399 AMD Fusion-based Lenovo S205. Through a number of video editing software tests I managed to get an acceptable 720p rendering speed out of the device which would be OK for short projects. For 480p output, it was good though. In this article I’m taking it up a notch in processing power to an Intel ‘Sandy Bridge’ based 13 inch laptop. It’s the lightweight Samsung 900X3A and given the right software, it’s proving to be a fantastic machine for 720p editing, rendering and […]

As a mark of respect to my readers that live in the public web domain (i.e. are not in Google Plus yet) and trust that I write openly for the internet, I’ve decided to refrain from using Google Plus until it becomes a public service. Yes, you can read my public postings but you can’t read my ‘restricted’ postings and that’s not what I intend to do as a blogger, connector and communicator. It came to me yesterday when I was talking to a local friend and respected mobile video […]

I keep reading articles that talk about Ultrabooks being an alternative to tablets and I think some misunderstanding has crept into common thought. Yes, there was a mention of ‘tablets’ when Intel talked about Ultrabooks but they weren’t referring to the tablet marketplace, they were simply referring to features. Consumer tablets offer some excellent advantages over the laptop. Not only in the mobile form factor but in the software. Features like always-on, touch user interfaces, long battery life, sensors and more. What Ultrabooks are aiming to do is to look […]

The HP TouchPad has hit the streets and the reviews are in… and they’re mixed. After reading through a number of reviews, here are a few of the things I’m seeing repeated: Sub-par performance the TouchPad’s 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon APQ8060 should have the oomph to compete with contemporary tablets, but it sounds like applications are running sluggishly, which is likely a combination of developers getting used to the platform and the software lacking a few years of optimization that has been seen on Android and iOS. Auto-rotation responsiveness is a […]

I, like many others, believe that Windows 8 will re-enable the pocket productivity market and lift us out of this strange consumer-focused mobile mess we’re in at the moment and get us back to a place where we have ultra mobile PC choices for our mobile, flexible working practices and scenarios. Marketing, social networking, price wars and tablet fever are getting in the way of what many people want productivity in the pocket. I love Android and IOS of course but I’m not letting that change my opinion that there […]
