Coming in at the mid-range of expected Ultrabook screen sizes the 13.3” Acer Aspire 3951 looks the business and there’s an interesting pricing rumour to go with it. Via Notebookitalia I’ve read that the Acer Aspire 3951 could be the first in a range of Acer ultrabooks. Given the potential cost of making the ‘engine’ it would make sense to deliver it in multiple bodies for a wider market. The 3951 will have a 13.3 inch screen. The source article has now gone (a good sign that it’s for real) […]

I’m sitting in front of an ExoPC which is now referred to internally as the Exo-1 because they’re looking for new hardware for the next generation ExoPC device Product X There’s a very open an interesting post up on the ExoPC discussion board about new hardware they’re testing. It’s clearly an Oaktrail-based device but they’re not giving the ID away at this stage because there’s some negative points being aired. It’s a thread that has already prompted me to post something on our own forum about Oaktrail and I’d like […]

It’s clear that tablets are moving to the enterprise. The iPad has already infiltrated many markets (pilots are getting iPads to carry manuals for example) and you’ll find them in many media companies. Android is moving that way too with Honeycomb leaning towards touch and mouse input methods. The operating systems are moving forward quickly (although there are still many limits) and the apps are following. What about the hardware though? Can you plug a keyboard and mouse into an Android tablet and get to work in a corporate fashion? Cisco seems […]

All I can say right now is “wow”. The Nokia N9 is the only high-end phone from Nokia that has drummed up significant interest and anticipation for some time now. Recent information indicates that it may not even launch in the US. The US certainly isn’t the only country in the world, contrary to the belief of some, but I’ve personally seen lots of people here who are more than excited by the Nokia N9, even if it is at severe risk of poor after-sale support. Now Nokia says that […]

Breaking: The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 TouchWiz Interactive Emulator just went live. Samsung calls it an emulator, but its really a simulator! Still, it gives you a way to play with TouchWiz before installing it on your device. I am not a fan of OEM UI’s. I am even less of a fan when they are not optional (more on that later). User interfaces added onto a device by their OEM, instead of just using the one that is part of the associated OS, are always better when they can […]

There’s teasing, and then there’s annoyance. For me, TabCo just passed the threshold into the latter. For a few weeks now, TabCo has been trying to drum up interest for a tablet that they’ll be announcing in the coming days. Their latest video, titled: “Product Sneak Peek inch, went live today, but it’s less of a “sneak peek inch and more of a “hey look, a bunch of CGI and not a hint of a real product or a real interface inch. Have a look and let’s be annoyed together: […]

We had so many problems with the UMPCPortal forum earlier this year that I eventually had to close the forum for new registrations. After some thought we decided to completely re-build the site on a new system and today we’re readyto announce our new mobile computing forum! It’s clean, fast and has all the features you expect. We’ve moved the new forum over to MeetMobility.com and expanded it to cover the segments that match our three main websites. UMPCPortal for pro-mobile and PC-based handheld devices [Forum section here.] Carrypad for consumer mobile devices [Forum […]
